3 of the refs for that game were from Murray! A hop skip and 20miles from MF!

I guess they are still bitter from 20 years ago.

Here is something I am going to throw into the mix that I think should be considered much more in big games between top tier teams - I will call it the stud factor. Really good teams always have those players that are clearly just a different level of athlete. Those players tend to come up big in the big games and make a difference by themselves. Here is how I see the special athletes on both teams and I ask Mayfield posters to add in the ones I am missing from Mayfield because there is probably a player or maybe two that I don't know enough about to include here.

Category 1 - The D1 athletes (a D1 athlete is a D1 athlete, regardless of sport)

Beechwood

RB/DB Ethan Stringer (Jr.) - already has a D1 scholarship in baseball from UL

OL/DL Brayden Combs (Jr.) - also has a D1 baseball scholarship but his is from UK

WR/DB Jeremy Burns (Sr.) - being recruited for a D1 scholarship in Lacrosse

Mayfield

OL Kel Carmen (Jr.?) - no doubt this kid is a D1 talent with his size and athleticism

Category 2 - No Doubt College Athlete but not sure about D1

Beechwood

Flex/DE Jonathon Stokes (Sr.) - Excellent talent and ability; makes big plays every week and certainly can play on the next level

OL Justin Overstreet (Jr.) - Has the size and ability to be D1; I will be more surprised if he doesn't play D1 than if he does

WR/LB Brett Slusher (Jr.) - May also become a D1 baseball player but has the ability to play college football if that works out better

Mayfield

RB Trajon Bright (So.) - Special talent but will his size keep him from going D1?

There may be a couple more from Mayfield I am missing so please add them in. However, please try to limit it to the highest level of athlete, not "he is a really good high school player". There are several others on Beechwood that I can say that about and who might even play a sport in college (Fieger, for example in baseball) but I am not including them in this list. I want just those very best stud players that will stand out on the field by making plays that show there is no doubt they are a college level athlete.

This D1 talk always bothers me about the Beechwood folks, I have heard this just about every year from you guys, and you hardly hear it from the Mayfield people. D1 is D1 no matter what sport? We are talking about football here, where we are talking about size and speed. The only player Mayfield has had that even got mention of D1 in a long time is Jonathan Jackson, and even he didn't go D1. Nussbaum didn't, he had the size and Vocke didn't, and he had the speed. I don't think the "stud" factor means much when you are facing a good defense like Mayfield, we shut down Vocke back when he played us, Nussbaum was the only successful athlete from Beechwood I can recall giving us fits.

His point is that an athlete is an athlete, and the best have that extra something. He's not being combative, simply making conversation. BTW Combs could be a D1 football recruit, but chose baseball. Good chance with his combo of size and speed that Stringer could too if he focused on that. He is more in the Nussbaum mold, great straight line speed and power but not the most elusive. I think its a great point VOR is making, and he isn't slanting to one side. Asked for input, not smack talk. I guess BW folks are as hung up on their athletes as MF is trying to convince us that historical results mean anything on Friday night.

Who knows, Beechwood may have 10 or 15 D1 players in some sport or another, but, I've never thought, in all the previous matchups, that they had better athletes than Mayfield did. I'd hear about how fast so and so was and when I saw them live, there speed didn't blow me away. I've never been overwhelmed with the Tiger athleticism. They are typically fundamentally sound and hardnosed. Everything else I hear is mostly overblown.

Comparisons of baseball and lacrosse to football are a stretch.

At any rate yes, you missed some.

* Tim McCampbell- Senior DE, 6'2" 225...easy college talent. has had college contact ( I'm sure the Beechwood QB will meet him Friday night)

* Marshall Bacon- Senior, 6' 3 1/2" 190 WR/Safety...easy college talent- has had college contact (also Cats Pause top 10 basketball player in region 1)

* Jordan Tyler- 6' 0" Senior RB/CB....runs about a 4.4/4.5 ...easy college talent- not sure of any college contact

trouble is...WKY is pretty far to drive to look for talent BUT the fact that Mayfield/Graves and Murray are 15 miles apart and are all representing in sub-state games...maybe that will change.

Could be, I've never seen MF play so I can't comment on comparisons. Again though, to VORs point, there are some athletes that are pretty special. Combs in a lineman, but athletic enough to warrant a scholarship to play baseball in the SEC. Stringer is athletic enough and fast enough to earn a scholarship to play CF at Louisville, and registered a 6.7 60 in showcases. Burns is the fastest kid on the team, and Slusher also ran a 6.7. Not sure what BW has in past or who said what, but those are facts. I am sure MF has every bit as good as athletes if not better, but to dismiss this BW team as just like the rest, unathletic and just fundamental, is incorrect.

While he may have misunderstood VOR's point, I think you in turn may have misunderstood his. I don't think he meant for anyone to take it as dismissing BW

Both are fairly equal, the Cantrell and Lit ratings are pretty accurate this time of year and both have them very close

As for VOR's thing

I certainly took from it that we don't want to play BW in baseball this year. I don't know as to MF, not a lot of college looks for this group outside of Karmen. Kenemore and Bacon are possible small college football players

We have several that are likely to get full rides for SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING:laugh:

We as Mayfield fans would never dismiss any athlete BW puts on the field. You just have to understand that we have heard these same comments every year that our team has played BW. For the most part, we have never seen these superb athletes show up in this game (Nussbaum being the exception I can think of). It's not meant to be a knock on the team at all, BW always has a sound and hard nosed group that we all respect. I would be willing to say that the players always know they played a great team on Sat mornings afterwards.

Having said that, this team could be an exception, time will tell. I promise you this........us MF fans will be the first to admit if our guys were out manned in this game. But until that happens, it's hard for us to give these players the credit they very well may deserve.

This was not meant to be a bash at all, just my observation. Best of luck to both teams!

The Mayfield posters are all correct on what I meant, all I am saying is I personally have seen it every year, that "X" Player is D1 talent, the one that comes to my mind recently is Vocke. Granted, this year has been a lot tamer it seems on the D1 touting, at least in this thread. We all knew Jonathan Jackson was special, and the best player on the field in most of his games, and he literally ran over kids, but he didn't go D1 and most of us fans knew it'd be tough given his size and I know I didn't say he was going D1 for sure.

Who are some of the names Beechwood folks have said were D1 talent?

Mayfield has played Beechwood 6 times and is 6-0 against them.

The Cardinals have out scored The Tigers 171 to 76.

Here is a look of the scores from the 6 previous matchups.

1995 Mayfield 28 Beechwood 27 State Final

2002 Mayfield 14 Beechwood 7 State Final

2009 Mayfield 38 Beechwood 0 Semi Final

2010 Mayfield 38 Beechwood 14 Semi Final

2011 Mayfield 19 Beechwood 14 Semi Final

2012 Mayfield 35 Beechwood 14 Semi Final

Can The Cardinals make it 7-0 against The Tigers and the streak continue or does Beechwood prevail and get their first win over Mayfield? I think this game comes down to whichever defense plays the best. I know our Cards defense is SOLID and especially against the run. Beechwoods defense seems to be pretty darn good too. I can recall in previous matchups we have won the battle in the trenches which IMO was the game changer in some of those games. Beechwoods line seems to be very good this year and that could be the difference in the outcome. Both teams have playmakers. So again I think it will come down to who can get the most stops and plays the best defense. Defense wins football games! So with that said I like our chances and I'm gonna say we get the victory and the streak continues on at 7-0 as we get to the final in our farewell tour of 1A. Cannot wait till Friday night! Gonna be a good one! Hope it's a hard fought game that comes out with no injuries! GO CARDINALS!!!!!

Vocke and Nussbaum are ones that come to mind without looking things up.

All talk aside, I personally enjoy coming up to Ft. Mitchell, I spend the night and just enjoy a great night of football. The crowd is electric, as a high school football crowd should be. Beechwood has a very nice facility, the field is always in excellent condition and with the recent changes reminds me of a small college, Murray State comes to mind. You guys have a lot to be proud of there in Ft. Mitchell.
