I get what he is saying...it is about discipline. You don't see Marines in formation wearing non-regulation clothing. You ever see a Kentucky State Trooper with green shoes or his tie tucked anywhere but between the 2nd and 3rd button on their uniform?

 

Little things like that build discipline in a person. Doing the things they have to do, not just the things they want to do also build character...which can't be measured on the scoreboard or with rings.

Actually, the whole "uniform uniforms" topic makes me wonder. I've noticed it more on the basketball court (not talking about HHS here) more than on the gridiron.

 

Is it a big deal? I remember posting several years ago about a (basketball) team that came out with any number of crazy shooting sleeves, headbands, different shoes and sock colors/lengths.

 

I blasted that team a bit for what I considered to be a lack of discipline. Am I just another card-carrying AARP old fogey who can't accept change, or is this a real issue?

If wearing neon socks helps win 22 state titles, puts you in contention year after year for another and the program remains in the Top 10 in the nation in number of wins, I'm all for it. I wish some of that tradition would rub off on us as would almost every other program in the country.

This is just plain stupid. Highlands football is all about tradition. 100 years worth. Some have come and gone. The one thing that doesn't change is the excellence on and off the field.

 

Riding bikes and burr haircuts have not been a part of this program for decades. Just because it was done that way in the 70's and 80's means it should be done today - really. We have a kid or two wearing the wrong color socks and the program is in anarchy - really.

 

I would guess that the reason for the "usual suspects" being quiet on this thread has more to do with the sense that it is not worth their time. A program in the midst of pursuing their 7th title in the last 8 years, currently 7-2 with losses to 2 very good opponents, and the concerns are socks, bikes, and haircuts. I'm not sure now why I wasted my time.

If you don't like seeing them this way then stay home! As to the last two home games, they were the toughest games of the year. If that is all you have for comparison, then you are short-siding yourself. I played for Duffy and we weren't allowed to remove helmets even on the bus. Weinrich also played for him. Maybe he is worrying about things more important than a helmet. All you "back in my day" people need to realize that it's not "your" school anymore. It's theirs.

Agreed stay home! These boys work hard all year long and read BGP quite often. They shouldn't have to logon and see something like this especially from an ex player. Socks will be dealt with I'm sure, however that alone should not warrant a public thread. I'm embarrassed for whoever started this thing. I'm sure the Principal will be calling on you soon.
