Does Johnson Central.....

Featured Replies

Have what it takes to make it to the big one or to even get past Cov Cath or Highlands?

Johnson Central is undefeated (8-0) and Coach Matney always puts a solid team on the field every season but when it comes to the playoffs, The Golden Eagles find themselves leaving with an early exit to either Covington Catholic or Highlands. Last season, Johnson Central fell to Covington Catholic 42-14 on their own home field in the first round of the 4A State Playoffs. In 2012, Covington Catholic beat Johnson Central 45-15 in the second round of the 4A Playoffs. Highlands defeated Johnson Central 67-20 in the second round of the 4A playoffs. In fact, since 2005, only 2 other teams besides Highlands and Covington Catholic have defeated the Golden Eagles, Madison Southern 2005 and Lincoln County 2007.

So, will 2014 be the same result as year's past with the Golden Eagles falling to either Covington Catholic or Highlands or will this be the Golden Eagles year to upset them?

IMO it is an unknown. With the schedule JC has had it is hard to tell just how good they are or can be. I've learned to never say never though.

I thought last year was "the team" for Johnson Central and they got throttled. It's hard to beat teams like Cov Cath and Highlands if you're not going neck and neck with them in the scorers column, especially with JC's offense.

I agree. Based on history, JC will not make it past CCH, let alone HHS. But it is a new season so let's see how it plays out. The great thing is that all the debating that goes on here will be settled on the field - I am looking forward to this year's playoffs more than recent years. Recently, in 4A, 5A and 6A, it was pretty much decided who would win before the season started (HHS, BG and Trinity). Not so this year...while all three of them could win their classes it is certainly a not a lock.

I believe that the series between Covington Catholic and Johnson Central stands at 3-3, with the biggest blowout win posted by the Golden Eagles. Johnson Central is a very talented but very young team. They may be a year away from seriously contending for a state title, but they will not be a long shot to beat the Colonels at home in a few weeks.

I'm going to say know but good luck Golden Eagles.

No chance. You have to schedule teams with a heartbeat.

I am trying to figure out if Johnson Central should be ranked in the top 10. Has their first team even needed to play any games yet?

Next year the two biggest roadblocks magically disappear from 4A. If they don't make a run to BG then it probably was just not meant to be.

While it is true that Highlands has dominated Johnson Central since it joined the region, the same cannot be said of Covington Catholic. If Johnson Central does not beat Covington Catholic this season, then it will be because of youth, not because of its weak schedule. JC ended the Colonels' 2008, 2009, and 2010 seasons.

JC will be very strong for the next few years, and if the Golden Eagles win a state title, it will not not necessarily be because Covington Catholic and Highlands moved up to 5A, although obviously some NKY fans are already trying to make that case preemptively.

I think JC has what it takes to take down Cov Cath, but Higlands is a different story.?

To play Devil's Advocate....

Boyle and LexCath have scheduled tough teams but haven't been able to overcome Highlands in the Semi's the past 5 years as well.

It also is not accurate to lump them in that they can't beat CovCath...they have done so a few times already.

Highlands is a different animal though... and to be honest that is essentially no different than any other team in 4A save Collins last year.

We will get a better idea of JC after this week...and a much better idea after next week against Belfry. From my standpoint they can probably play with CCH but Highlands will put a hurting on them.

Didn't Cov Cath limped into the playoffs last season, went to JC without their starting QB and other skill players? If so and they still beat JC @ JC by that score. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that.

They're playing Belfry next week.

They beat JC badly, but I wouldn't say they limped into the playoffs. They had won 6 straight games entering that one including a blowout of Drew Barker and Conner. They entered 9-2 with losses to Highlands and Moeller.
