I think you have to do whatever it takes to make quality match ups.

 

Example: the bluegrass bowl in Lexington this year matched up 2 quality 6A schools in Bryan Station and St.X. Anyone of those teams could've pleaded for a home and home instead they benefited by testing their coaches and players on a neutral site. Any could argue that their schedules were already loaded, but that was a great test. JC could create match ups with quality teams on neutral sites or bowls like the Bluegrass one to justify their programs legitimacy. Instead they get punched for the first time come playoffs and they curl up in a ball.

In the football final 4 that's about to take place in January is anybody mentioning Marshall? No! So what they are undefeated. Their resume doesn't compare to Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Florida State, or Alabama's. So records don't mean much if the team lacks a pulse that you are pounding on.

Now as defense to JC... plantmanky nailed something else. They legitimately are a program noone wants to play on almost every level.

These are some great points you make. I guess I don't realize the disadvantage a lack of infrastructure (big roads) makes. Ultimately if the JC Coach and/or administration don't want to "think out of the box" with some of the things that you've mentioned or others then they will simply just grind it out and lose in the playoffs every year. I'm sure Logan County and many other teams would like that problem.

The last few years they have had Bowling Green, Bryan Station, St.X, and Lexington Catholic play one another. As far as them calling JC to participate I don't think anyone would rather play JC than the four I named. And their are other locations that have a bowl game like this. Or a regular season game to help each team out. I remember a couple of years ago John Hardin playing Catholic in a bowl game. It can be done but the real question is does JC want that?

 

You could do something on a Saturday at a neutral site with a team and make it happen even if the host school had a game that Friday. I think if you want the respect of the general public for your program you have to swing for the fences and get some quality match ups.

Highlands also has a packed trophy case and is the second winningest program in the Nation.

Not so sure about JC being a favorite over Cov Cath, especially if the game is in Northern KY.

Johnson Central would host Covington Catholic in any possible playoff scenario this season. Now if Johnson Central loses to Ashland this weekend, a JC/Highlands game would be in the second round and in northern Kentucky. If Johnson Central beats Ashland, any postseason game the Golden Eagles play this November will be in Paintsville.

But if you want your program to take it to the next level and be competitive, why not take the challenge and show the doubters and earn that respect. Some one said here earlier. The unwilling to do what it takes to hit the road ( trip ) and challenge their program to be a legitimate state contenders... Instead they play cupcake city. Well that's how I see it. But then again who am I? Just my 2 cents in this topic.

Actually it has worked. There are no drums being beating to gather the natives to oust Matney. If anything they've picked up on his "us against the world" thing. They're not the stuff of legends across the state, but they're the bully on the block in EKY. Maybe that's enough.

You have to pay bills, and you need to avg. 5 home games a year.

Antics are different, but I liken Matney to Marksberry at SK. Play easy schedule, get a bunch of wins in the regular season and then win a playoff game or two. No need to play tough teams because the quarters or semi's is as far as you're going to get anyway. Keep some interest in the program, because we're winning. Hope that maybe one day the stars align, the earth turns on it's axis and the sun freezes for a day and we'll win a state title. Or in JC's case, wait for Highlands and CovCath to move to 5A.

But you forgot who their coach is. Matney doesn't want to earn respect, he demands it. The man's ego is bigger than the city he resides in. I don't doubt for a second he is a great coach, but some of his actions and decisions are why he has a hard time finding teams to play him. It's not that everyone is scared to play JC, but given their location and his reputation, they are not going to get a home and home or single home game against the teams they should be playing to prepare for the playoffs.

 

If they put a little effort and compromise into their scheduling, they would be able to fill their non district games with teams that would at least not be blowouts.

 

It makes you wonder why? Are the people in charge so hard headed that they think they are above traveling to play a competitive opponent, or do they just enjoy running up the score on teams that are obviously not good? The "no one wants to play us" argument is ridiculous.

JC HS & MS teams have the same problem. In that area they are the big fish, and no one will schedule them at all, or will only schedule them for games in which JC must travel.

 

The MS team this year only had one home game all year, and traveled 3 plus hours 3 times this year just to play games.

 

My point, just dont put this on JC for not trying to schedule better games.

 

Have they tried the First or Second Week of the season route and gone to a Bowl type game at say Mt Sterling, Boyle, or a similar event? I know it doesn't give JC a Home game but it puts them out there to play top teams to start the year.
