Did Reagan & Carter serve?

 

President Carter is a USNA grad so he served.

Even though it isn't something that is required by any POTUS to do? People are getting fired up about something that the POTUS isn't even required to do.

 

I'm not required to call President Obama President Obama either, but...it's a respect thing, if not for the man at least for the office and it's importance. And as for me personally I'm not fired up over it, others might be I don't know. It's just another thing I kind of just shake my head and shrug at.

I would have guessed that neither served.

Im guessing the military hates when he does salute because they have to do it back. And from what I read and hear, our military doesnt care to much for him.

My dad is a retired Air Force officer. When I asked him he said it was a huge form of disrespect for the military. My dad is a pretty easy going guy but he was VERY adamant about this. The level of respect Obama has from current military and retired vets speaks volumes, IMO, about what kind of president he has been. I trust the opinion of our military above just about all else; especially my dad. I never hear him say a bad word about the POTUS because he IS the POTUS, but it is clear that his presidency has left a bad taste in his mouth.

What is military norm when you receive a salute but your hands are full ie GWB holding the dog, you are carrying a tray of food or let say you are holding a child. Would you be expected to put the child down or would shifting the child to your left hand and returning the salute be an appropriate gesture. What about a tray of food?

I'm not really sure that this settles the debate. An unnamed Marine official isn't exactly the voice of all military. Maybe there is no written procedures for how a POTUS should salute members of the military, but I figure that if you ask enough military you would find that many don't care and are not bothered by this salute while many others were offended.

 

I still feel that like most other things in life, if your going to do it, do it right and properly.

Yeah, I should have clarified my post, it wasn't really meant toward him, but those that I know will jump on the "Bush did it" bandwagon.

No. I'm asking was this the same scrutiny of other presidents. Obama has enough of a resume to be derided, I'm just wondering if this is big enough to warrant three pages if it didn't when other presidents failed to return a proper salute?

I'm sure you remember how much Bush was scrutinized, and I mean from the get go. Obama isn't treated any worse by the right than Bush was by the left. Honestly, the reason Obama gets hammered for this kind of stuff is because of his exceedingly pompous arrogance.
