I heard tonight on ABC news that the practice of saluting began with Reagan. So I guess all the presidents who traveled by helicopter prior to Reagan had zero respect, rather than mere disrespect.

If I were the president, I would probably prefer the servicemen/women not to salute me since I would feel never serving, I did not earn the honor of receiving a salute. However, similar to Reagan, if a serviceman/woman were to salute me, I would always salute back out of respect and to show gratitude towards their show of respect to me and also to relieve them of holding their salute and to prevent the awkwardness of them having to stand there wondering when they can lower their arm.

That is interesting, thanks for posting. Regarding the video, after reading this he shouldn't salute. If he does he needs to so it correctly and respectfully. At the end of the day if military personnel are offended by it he was in the wrong. If they are ok with it so be it. It doesn't offend me but I've never served. So basically I will defer judgement to those that have.

I am just like this. However, if you didn't salute them it wouldn't bother me at all. Being on that stage he needs to be more aware of how everything he does is scrutinized and if giving a proper salute makes people happy he should do it properly.
