Like Jim Shue, if I had to switch careers, I would not mind opening a restaurant. My business model would be serving food that I like at a reasonable price: pulled pork, catfish, chicken and dumplings, chicken biryani, tamales, etc.

 

There is a little hole in the wall in West Jackson, MS, called Tony's Tamales that does a great business with a menu that lacks any theme but consists of simple dishes prepared like you would fix them at home if you had time. Every time that I drove through Tony's for a bag of tamales, red beans and rice, or chicken and dumplings, I thought to myself that such a restaurant would do well anywhere.

 

Eastern Kentucky is saddled with way too many fast food and pizza restaurants. I have found nothing like Tony's there or anywhere else that I have lived since leaving home.

 

Realistically, if I were forced to change professions, then I would probably resume my engineering career long enough to train myself to do something else. A man has to eat. :lol2:

Not me. Way too much work involved.

 

The restaurant/bar business in general is a lot of work, bad hours, and involves a lot of job hopping. If you are good in a particular aspect of the trade, it's a great way to travel. Flip side, don't get to comfortable in one place.

 

Even the exec. chefs I've known at highly acclaimed places, deal with a lot of the above pitfalls. Of course, they get paid plenty, but every gig starts the clock to the next gig. Tough business.

Now there's another one I think I would enjoy.

My dream is to own a bed and breakfast/coffee shop. Definitely not a different profession, but I can't imagine going anything else other than what I do.

I always tease Mrs. Tank that I am going to campaign for Mayor of A-town. Local politics has always interested me. I have struggled over the last few years about getting my teaching degree. Not a lot of money but giving back and the schedule would make it worth while. I have always regretted not joining the military when I was younger.
