I believe that it is extremely likely that life is fairly common in the universe - but there is really no way to prove that it is common until it is found in at least one more place. Even if life is found elsewhere in the Solar System, it is possible that it originated on Earth.

Actually started to watch The Cosmos on Netflix this week, our neck of the woods is very young compared to other parts of the universe that are at least 3 times as old as our solar system, and our galaxy has over 300 billion stars, and they say there could be up to 225 billion galaxies (there could be more, a lot more). And we are the plane with life? With at least 6e+22 stars out there? If you go by some newer stats from Hubble there are over 500 billion galaxies, which would be about 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars with a conservative estimate of 100 billion stars per galaxy.

Think about it everyone, there are probably multiple civilizations out there that are BILLIONS of years more advanced than us.

 

There was an old Saturday Night Live skit where aliens came to Earth and they were way behind us. They had slingshots and their advanced weaponry was a musket.

If you can't find an 8 foot tall, 400 pound bigfoot or a sea critter the size of a dinosaur in a small lake, odds of finding aliens in an entire galaxy are pretty small.

 

If you are referring to our Milky Way Galaxy you could possibly be right. But ours is a small galaxy compared to others (only 100,000 light years across), and there's billions of other galaxies in the universe. I'm not a mathematcian odds but I'd say the odds increase with those kind of numbers.

This. We are a small pea in the pod. No way are we by ourselves. Alone in this galaxy doesn't mean alone in existence.

I wonder if aliens can see what we post on BGP. Wonder what their thoughts are about us. Lol.

This may be a dumb question, but I'm not really a space guy. Ask me about AAU, fastpitch softball and Highlands football and I'll tell you. But this always amazes me...everyone says there is soooo much more out there. How do they know??? How do we know there is that much more out there? Have we been there? Is that just a scientific guess? How far can we actually see and identify?

 

BTW...I take the stand of until I see it, we are the only ones out there and its a useless debate. I'm not saying there isn't something out there is the place is as big as we think, but not really concerned about it until they attack!!!!

Many "know there has to be life out there" without having proof, while knocking those that also say they "know there is a God" without showing proof.

 

This fact has always interested me.
