July 30, 201412 yr Do people in other countries use hard drugs as much as Americans do? What is that stuff---khat---that is used in SE Asia? Does the populace in drug-exporting countries use the drugs they export to the good ol' US of A? What happens to a country's work force and productivity when everyone is on drugs? Sheesh. Very unnecessary for the girl to die---if it was drugs.
July 30, 201412 yr Can anyone find any updates on the investigation? Nothing definitive or official, but I have seen/heard more on social media today about it being an over dose.

As I society, I believe we are too tolerant, and that is part of the problem. We raised three children to adults, and we 1) made it clear that drugs would not be tolerated; and 2) we assured they were not put in situations where they would be subject to peer pressure to use drugs until they were mature enough to resist the pressure. I found it interesting though that government research only lists drug use at the 7th rated problem well behind alcohol and tobacco. Maybe from a sheer financial aspect (which even then I would question) it is because tobacco and alcohol have a longer history of tracking and more users. However tell that to the parents of the girl who OD'd. How many college students died of binge drinking (take our drunk driving)? Are the numbers equivalent? According to this report, and where I think it makes sense...is that to curb abuses, it takes first a common commitment of the people, communication and education. A comment: what is amazing to me (and I am not a fan of either) is how many people are anti-tobacco, but think marijuana use is OK...and my perception would be this includes a lot of pro-athletes.
July 30, 201412 yr Are cheerleaders drug tested like other athletes on scholarship? Cocaine does not stay in your system very long - about 3 days - meaning it would not be too difficult to pass a drug test even if you're a regular cocaine user.

I suppose you could say one is a 24 hour a day habit and the other is for recreational (sometimes medical) use. I really like Bourbon and Beer but if we want to get all proactive in this country Alcohol needs to be addressed first.

July 30, 201412 yr I hate it for the family and the university and community. But as bad as it sounds to say, my son has an up close case of what can happen and what we've preached over his 20 years. Sometimes when it hits that close to home it becomes more real. Again, I hate it and hope that somehow it changes the lives and habits of those she may have been involved with.

University rules require drug screening of student-athletes in accordance with NCAA rules, to detect usage of banned drugs, but cheerleading is not an NCAA-sponsored sport, Christine Simatacolos, associate athletic director for student life, said in an interview."

According to the article that I read cheerleadering is not an NCAA sponsored sport so the cheerleaders are not subject to NCAA drug testing. However, the counseling and treatment programs that the other athletes have. It said that UL does not drug test cheerleaders on its own but UK does. So it sounds like it is up to the individual school as to whether cheerleader are tested.
July 31, 201412 yr My son said that the word through UL students via social media was cocaine. Again, just relaying what he said. What a tragedy if true. One of my daughter's sorority sisters was the girls roommate and my daughter was told it was ecstasy. But who knows what the real story is, and whatever the cause it's sad to lose someone so young.
July 31, 201412 yr Young people never think it will happen to them, they think they are invincible at that age. It goes from drinking, speeding, driving like a maniac, drugs, sex. All a parent can hope for is they make the right decision when faced with peer pressure. I hope they find out who she got it from and charge them with murder.

I remember when there was a drug/alcohol induced all out brawl between a few male cheerleaders. One of the most amazing fights I've wittnessed, they were throwing furniture at each other. One guy picked up a couch and smashed a guy between it and the wall. The best part is they were all fighting over a guy. It was a berry surreal experience.
