If a new "one freebie" rule WON'T change anything as you suggest, then why implement it?

 

Why advocate a rule change with no affect/effect?

FWIW, it would be a lot easier for transfers in Louisville, Lexington and NKY than say WKY, Bowling Green, Hardin County where schools are more spread out if people didn't have to worry about moving.

 

Check the transfer PDFs on the KBSA minutes/agendas the KHSAA has to provide. More often than not, these are the types of transfers found ineligible:

 

- Tilghman to McCracken (and likewise)

- Frankfort to Franklin County or Western Hills

- Danville to Boyle

- Holy Cross to Lloyd

 

And so on.

 

Most of those kids/families/parents never move (yet tried to transfer anyway).

 

A freebie transfer WOULD have major implications -- especially to those in areas where there is another school in an easy drive.

 

Greenup County? Hancock County? No change.

 

Louisville? Lexington? NKY? Can of worms. Pandora's box.

People are quick to say it's just sports and to not take it so serious. I agree. It's just sports. Let them play.

This thread is massive and is hard to piece everything out. BUT in regards to the AD and Super of Knott Co. Schools position in all this, cordia operates very independently from the school board. The AD at Knott Central is also the AD at Cordia I believe. Whatever the SDMB and Alice Whitaker decide to do is what happens. Be that as it may, I believe they've tried to intervene several times and it just caused all out war at the board meetings. IMO, Cordia should ride out this appeal and cut ties if they fail with Mr. Rhodes and get an alum in that spot that loves that school.

Simple solution to the whole problem. CLUB BALL and do away with school sports all together. 95% of schools say they don't have the budget or fight amongst the programs because of title 9. Heck this way we also do away with KHSAA.

Some people give reasons for why (one-time) transfers should be OK, but then expect the number of transfers NOT to skyrocket? How so?

 

And how would allowing one-time transfers NOT impact recruiting?

 

With the one-time transfer you're making it HARDER on those struggling schools/programs to ever get better, because you're making it EASIER for their top kids to leave.

 

Why would they stay when they could go to a nearby better program no questions asked? And if you think they SHOULD stay, why do you advocate a one-time free pass? Seems counteractive and counter-intuitive.

 

Who cares about developing younger kids when you can just encourage better ones to come to your school? And if you're a parent of a student that had bided his or her time, how would you feel to have some "hired guns" lock down that roster spot/playing time your kid had worked hard to get?

 

There's also something to be said for school spirit/community support when you have stars no one recognizes/follows. Even some EKY folks felt Cordia wasn't a "local" team.

 

The transfers would not skyrocket because the KHSAA only controls athletics. The schools themselves would still dictate which students can and cannot transfer in according to where they live. For example, the Pulaski County Schools System recently decided not to allow students living in their district to attend Science Hill or Somerset Schools. Having a free athletic transfer would not allow a student in the Pulaski system to transfer to the Somerset system without changing addresses. While I'm sure some families would physically move to take advantage of an open transfer rule I don't think it would be an epidemic.

Folks who want to transfer are going to do so whether they get a freebie or not. Do you really think rules or no rules is going to make your scenario change at all? I don't.

In that case, Pulaski County only has the ability to dictate that they will not enter into an agreement to allow SEEK funding to follow nonresidents. It is not in their power to deny a student's ability to transfer. If Science Hill or Somerset wanted to accept a child without funding, they may do so. They could also compel a student transferring to simply pay a tuition equivalent to the SEEK funding and not miss a beat. Believe me, we have been dealing with this stuff here in BG/Warren County for two years - I'm well versed on this.

 

Bottom line is that if they want to accept that student, they can absolutely do so and there's not a blessed thing the original district can really do. And I do believe a transfer rule like has been proposed in this thread would lead to a dramatic increase. We have a decent amount of movement even now here in Warren County.

You don't have to live in Louisville to attend Trinity.

You don't have to even live in Hardin County to attend Elizabethtown (independent public) or Central Hardin (public). You don't have to live in Nelson County to attend Bardstown Bethlehem (independent Catholic private). Don't have to live in Fayette County to attend LexCath.

 

By doing this, you're hurting publics even more because privates have broader pools.

To make it EASIER to transfer (one freebie, no questions asked, no moving necessary) and expect transfers to stay the same/decrease is beyond crazy.

 

Out in Podunk? No impact.

A lot easier to afford Trinity and X and Notre Dame and Sacred Heart and Assumption for one year than it is four years.

 

If I was a volleyball parent and my kid had a shot, I'd do everything in my power to get her to SHA or Assumption for her senior year. And I don't even have to move? Heck yes.

Why wouldn't you just send your kid there when your kid is a freshman?

I have yet to run into anyone who says that they wish they had one freebie transfer. There are so many risks that come in transferring and those that transfer are going to do so whether they get a freebie or not. The numbers may skyrocket with one freebie transfer but I don't care. Let them play. Want to leave again? You better be moving legitimately.

I believe that's the direction it's gong everywhere. That's why international ball has caught up with the US. They only do club ball. With the amount of turnover at schools now, and kids transferring like crazy, if I had a son or daughter that wanted to only do AAU, I'd be all for it.
