Hammer dropped on Cordia

Featured Replies

Rhodes supposedly joked on FB about Cordia fans not having to worry about losing to Knott Central this year.

Surely, he will never coach a game there again, right?

I'd hope he never coaches a game in the state of Kentucky again.

Cordia actually used two ineligible players that I seen....Ouch...

I may be wrong but after reading the remarks from the KHSAA I got the impression that they were using the signing of the agreement by participating schools as reason for some of their conclusions. Particularly, if the KHSAA rules that a player is not eligible and one goes to a judge and ignores their ruling they are in violation of the signed agreement by the institution. I may be wrong but I would conclude that the KHSAA sees themselves as having the final word. The courts may rule otherwise.

My posts in The Crossover's defense aren't to bring people to their side. I could not care less who is on whose side. IMO based on the knowledge I have about The Crossover's situation it is easy to see that The Crossover could have been taken advantage of because they have a talented son. The Crossover could have been lied to from the jump abut what is and isn't acceptable in the rules. You guys act like you got the whole story from what The Crossover publicly posted but I guarantee you don't have the whole story about any of The Crossover's situation. I'm just as interested as anyone else to hear from The Crossover in regards to this situation but I'm not going to chase The Crossover down for a response. Obviously The Crossover has other things going on that requires attention.

You kind of just summed up a lot of what I said in my post that you responded to...so seems to me we are more in agreement than not. I also stated she/son may have been used/taken advantage of and sold a bill of goods. But I don't know.

What I do know is that she had plenty of time during the season to post her opinions on here. I'm quite sure if she wanted to she could find a few minutes to do so now. I'd love to hear her opinion on the administration there at Cordia and on Coach Rhodes today compared to 8 months ago.

It is a big part of it, to use the race card as a defense, when I do not believe anyone brought up race, that does deserve an apology, which we will never get.

I guess we can just agree that your wrong! Errrr, I mean to disagree.

Now onto other things... :)

I think what got several people riled up about her posts the most (among other things) was her insinuation that those of us that didn't like what was going on was based on the color of most of the young men involved. Which, as far as me personally and I know for many others as well couldn't be any further from the truth.

To be entirely fair, there were some localized racist incidents directed at Cordia, as well as social media incidents. To someone such as Crossover, criticism on BGP probably unfairly got deposited into the same file. The bunker mentality didn't come out of thin air.

It doesn't matter the reason why the school paid for the plane tickets. That's against the rules. Schools can't pay for things like that and if there is a way for the schools to pay for it they should have followed the rules properly to pay for it. It's really that simple.

So I'm getting the sense in this thread that Trinity in 2012, Lexington Catholic in 2002, University Heights in 1992... those schools must have been fortunate to have a ton of athletes who grew up in their feeder programs and just defied tons of odds given their typical economic demographic to wind up with teams like they had (and two of those ran through the field like a buzzsaw). Man, do people love relocating to Georgetown. Newport Central Catholic is a tiny school that gets 3 kids capable of starting on talented teams that decide it's time to pull the trigger and make the move. People in Eastern Kentucky are statistically some of the least mobile people in the nation in terms of moving and relocating, but man, historically does Clay County and recently Knott County Central and Perry County Central not just catch some breaks when it comes to the kind of contributions they've gotten from kids who didn't start start their careers at those schools.

Some schools in the 12th should play the lottery with the way they've had coaches who've been able to get foreign kids through "random selection" that wound up being great basketball players.

If Corida played a kid who was 19, then shame on them and I'm not taking up for that at all and I'm no way being sarcastic about that. I won't take up for that, letting a kid who could be doing well academically completely fall through the cracks just because they are a good athlete, or anything that's exploitive of the kids.

I will say that, personally, I don't have a problem with it if they give stuff out for free that other places can offer five times the benefits that a private can offer under the label of "work study", financial aid, and the like, then I'm not really going to be boo-hooing for those schools and crying about an unfair playing field just because it's traditionally thought of as a "have not" Eastern Kentucky school.

I'm just saying that I don't see buying a kid a plane ticket when know one knows the story behind it yet as the egregious violation that others do. I'm saying that the fair market value for the cost of attendance to and a dorm room at Cordia is probably a drop in the bucket considering what some programs are budgeting if we wanted to go all forensic accounting on their books.

Some schools can probably find a way to legally and under bylaws game the system and confer benefits in the way of expensive tuition, "team gear", schedules that include a week at the beach during winter, maybe a "hand up" instead of a "hand out" to a parent or family member whose had some tough luck, or maybe not hiring the most qualified assistant but it ends up working out because their kid's talent makes up for them missing an occasional film session, etc.

Other schools might not have the benefit of having things like that going for them to the same extent, but I'm not going to trash them for trying to want something they see as possibly being better for themselves by doing the same kinds of things.

You really want to clean up and play everything straight and completely by the rules, send everyone back to their districts, cut out the slightest hint of any improper benefit. Do all of that and we're probably seeing a changing of the guard in terms of some of the schools at the top of the basketball food chain. If we're really going to strictly do everything by the book, then you can have what the UHAs, Lexington Catholics, Trinitys, Scott Countys, etc. Take your group of 10 of them. Give me the last 10 schools to win the 4 x 100 relay who have a student population of over 300-500 kids (which I haven't looked up). First one to have 10 basketball titles from their group of schools win. Whose chances do you like?

You sound like Jon Hood offering up blanket accusations with no proof of any wrong doing whatsoever. Show me some proof and then we can discuss it.

To to answer your question, yes, people legally relocate all of the time. Jeremiah Bell just legally relocated to Danville from Louisville. Boyle County's coaches didn't pay for anything or arrange for anything. The family moved on their own free will. Cordia paid for all kinds of crap and got caught. There's nothing you can say that is going to make that acceptable.

Exactly. I grew up in EKY and can tell you that I've seen OBI teams that aren't good hear some pretty nasty stuff from the stands. From the perspective of winning the game, they aren't a threat at all, but there was an incident where their team needed police escort... to leave a middle school game. Another school had kids waving nooses at a big "All A" game. That's not a "rivalry", "kids being kids", or a "stupid parent in an isolated incident that made the community look bad".

No, it isn't every night and things like that are the worst of the worst, but yes, as someone who grew up in EKY, I think it's ridiculous for someone who didn't have the same experiences that I had in regards to the types of things they witnessed or heard about let me know how wrong I am about how ugly some of that can be.

Generally speaking, I think it's safe to say that most parents have a degraded view of a place when members of the community are as vocal as some are about their disdain for their children. Imagine that. It's like saying, "you mean racial slurs are offensive?".

Everyone in EKY isn't a hardcore racist, and it's not just a "race" thing because they'd be just as bad if it were someone who was homosexual, said they didn't believe in God and would call the ACLU if there was a prayer in the locker room, registered as a member of the Communist party, said they were Muslim and proud of it, etc. It's just an ignorant, "you are different and I don't understand it, I don't like it", pack-mentality at some places and when it gets ugly, wow, does it ever devolve quickly.

When you have to have a couple of State boys come in and monitor a game between two rival schools that are pretty homogenous, when there's a story that makes ESPN about a number of kids at one school beating another team's best player up and breaking his hand after a regional game, that should tell you what a powder keg it can be when you throw an element like race into the mix.

To the bolded and to the bolded only. No, I'm not putting people on blast like that publicly, and even if I wanted to and could, it'd be a ton of rules violations. I am defending the people who are getting put on blast for playing the same game (again, I've been firm in saying that IF Keita was 19 and passed as an 8th grader, then whoever knew about that and went on with it won't get a pass from me).

I've heard you say "where there's smoke there's fire" more than once.

If we're talking about solid, concrete proof, then show me proof that Oumar Keita is 19 and then we'll talk. I'm not talking about innuendo and colloquialism on message boards, I'm talking something that I've ever seen a firm verification of. Show me an article that's published by someone who could claim an evidentiary privilege as a journalistic source in a criminal trial but could still get the hell sued out of them for libel or defamation in a civil trial putting it in ink or pixels. I'm talking about something that there's been a statement from the KHSAA on. Give me that, then I'll accept it as concrete. Right now, it's not anything more, but it's something that tons of people have already taken as a fact and ran with it.

If everyone can play hard and loose with that situation, then I don't see why it's any worse for me to make the same kind of statements but be challenged on them.

I have what I consider to be a justified true belief on concerning how more than one kid who went to a grade school and middle school where the relative average property value is on the lower end of the city's scale but ends up at a school that people who've been at the other ends of that same economic scale their entire life have put their kids on the waiting list for and are still holding out hope that they'll be able to pay to send them there. Naming names in that kind of situation and in this manner isn't my style.

I say good for their kids for getting to go where they want and that if their talents have led to a situation where they felt like they've had some options opened up, then more power to them. I'll speak generally, but getting too specific and naming names in a public forum with stuff like "you know this kid had to get help to afford THAT" is a little too harsh, however true the reality of it may or may not be.

Maybe one day the KHSAA will name names then and we'll be able to verify exactly what rules were broken and for who. If you're allowed to believe what you believe about everyone else I'll happily trust my sources who have never let me down before concerning Keita's actual age. Too bad he went back to his homeland before we could ask him ourselves. I still find it hilarious there are 14 rules violations that have been found yet you still defend Cordia. Hilarious.

I guess I'm not the only one who thinks OJ didn't kill Nichole Brown and Ron Goldman.

I'm not defending them if Keita was 19. I trust your judgment and believe your word if you say you trust your sources.

I'm just saying that I personally know and/or have good sources that would say they aren't the only school who might have some dirt on them. I'm not going to put anyone else on blast, but I'll say that outside of the Keita thing, then I'm pretty sure they aren't doing anything that a handful of others aren't.

Again, if proven true, then the Keita thing is a really big deal though, and I'm not saying it's not. It's also something that's fooled people in more than one high basketball circle too. We're talking about a player whose been invited to camps John Lucas' and the Jr. All American camp.

Grade school.

If by middle school you mean 8th grade for the older Knipp then sure.

If it has been mentioned I apologize but anyone read Rhodes' Facebook posts? Bizarre at best. Issues anyone?

It really doesn't matter if other schools have dirt on them. The other issue with Keita...was he living with Rhodes? There were numerous pictures posted on Facebook of vacations and everything. I have covered a lot of basketball and I've never seen anything like this. I'm amazed that you still find ways to defend these actions.
