June 10, 201412 yr Well Reds are 3 games below .500 after 61 games but is the glass ......? Half-full: Votto hurt and missed games, career low batting average has to come up Bruce hurt and missed games, career low batting average has to come up Latos hurt and has not pitched yet Chapman hurt and missed games Mesoroco hurt and missed games Cozart terrible 2 months, career low batting average has to come up Middle relief bullpen terrible 2 months Half empty: Cueto can't continue to pitch at that level Simon can't continue to pitch at that level Broxton can't continue to pitch at that level Mesoroco can't continue to hit at that level Frazier can't continue to hit at that level Which is it?
June 10, 201412 yr Get folks healthy, do something about the terrible bullpen and there's a CHANCE to make some noise in the division.
June 10, 201412 yr I'm just a guy who has a glass with half water in it. I'm not one way or the other yet, I'm not very encouraged with how this season is going, but I can see them being better with them being 100%. I really don't know and that scares me. This team needs to be either in it at the all star break or out of it. They can't just be an average team that can still go either way.
June 10, 201412 yr Cardinals won't continue to play at that level. Neither will the Pirates. Glass back to half empty.
June 10, 201412 yr All the way empty. You must have been thirsty. Unfortunately, my glass is only about a quarter full or quarter empty. Not sure how that works when it isn't 50/50, but either way, I don't have a lot of hope left.
June 10, 201412 yr Very disappointed in how the season has gone, however if at the beginning of the year you had told me that Votto, Bruce, Mesoraco, Broxton, Chapman, & Marshall would all miss significant time, and that Latos wouldn't make his 1st appearance until mid-late June, I would've been ecstatic if you told me they were hovering around .500. I'm not ready to give up yet. There's a part of me that says once they're completely healthy they've got a little fight/run in them. :idunno:
June 10, 201412 yr Definitely half-full. In answer to your half-empty reasoning: -Cueto (if he can stay healthy) is as good a pitcher as there is in baseball. He might not keep up his exact numbers, but I don't see any reason that he won't stay close to that level. -The return of Latos means Simon won't have to stay that good. He might not even stay in the rotation. -Broxton doesn't have to be elite for the bullpen to improve. Now that they are nearing full strength it will be much better the rest of the way. -Mesoraco will certainly drop off from his torrid start, but I don't see a reason that Frazier can't stay near his current level. Also, the schedule should get easier moving forward. Barring injuries, I don't see anything that should prevent a significant improvement over the next 100 games.
June 10, 201412 yr I too think Frazier and Cueto, barring injury, can hover around their current numbers. Meso might not hit .350, but I see no reason he can't be around .300. The bullpen has been pitching very much better recently. Key is the back half needs to be good to keep them in games when the starters don't go deep. Ondrusek, Hoover, Marshall. Also, Parra needs to be better as the LH specialist. Votto and Bruce need to hit the back of their baseball card. I keep thinking Bruce is going to go off on one of his torrid 20 game streaks where he is crushing everything to get his numbers back where they always are.
June 10, 201412 yr Hmm. I still think if they can start hitting and producing runs, they can win. But nothing really makes me think that will happen. Too bad, with the pitching staff they have.
June 10, 201412 yr By the all star game we'll be talking about who will play 2nd base the back half of the season. Reds will be sellers with little to offer but over priced contracts of Phillips, Votto and Bailey. Steal of the trade deadline may be Simon.
June 10, 201412 yr Get folks healthy, do something about the terrible bullpen and there's a CHANCE to make some noise in the division. The bullpen, at full strength, is not a major concern for me.
June 10, 201412 yr Also, the schedule should get easier moving forward. Not sure about that: starting June 13th, they play 16 of 19 on the road. At the Brewers, Pirates, home for the Blue Jays, then at the Cubs, the Giants and the Padres. Some beatable teams, for sure, but some division leaders and trips out west are never easy. If they are around .500 on July 3rd, I think they have a great chance to make the dog days of summer interesting. They have 16 home games between July 4th and July 30th -- have to make hay in that stretch.

Problem is, if they are around .500 on July 3rd, they will have a decision to make as to whether to be buyers or sellers.
