I think that is a gross over-reaction. Teams have been cutting-bait with bad guys in the locker room since the late 1890's. Occurs all of the time in pro sports....no reason to do any ledge-jumping.

It really has nothing to do with on the field BP. He's their best player currently and that is tough to debate. But if this team has any chance going forward he has to go. (along with some other poor contracts)

I know it specifies he can block a trade to the Yankees (came up last year in the BP for Brett Gardner conversations), but I'm not sure the breadth of the clause currently in his contract.
