The intentional foul angle is interesting. There is zero doubt in my mind that Ruthsatz did intentionally create the contact. I have never seen that called an intentional foul, but that clearly was intentional by Ruthsatz.

I take no issue with anything said, but your point caused me to wonder this - When the last time anyone saw an intentional foul called on and offensive player with the ball? I cannot recall ever seeing this.

Never have seen it called. Honestly, I never even thought of it till Guru mentioned it. Then when I looked up the intentional foul rule and saw the part about excessive, non-flagrant contact it made me think maybe it is an intentional foul BY THE RULE BOOK.

 

The other thing I'll say, is the majority of the time the actions of the offensive player are not as flagrant as what Ruthsatz did on this play. He wasn't even attempting to take a shot. His whole purpose was to create contact and get a foul call.

I have seen them call that ghost foul many times. You would think the Refs would be onto his shenanigans by now but I guess what better time to use it then in the Regional tournament with Refs who havent seen him.

Why was it a foul in real time?

In real time I thought it was an Offensive foul and no shot was ever attempted. In video review I thought it was an Offensive foul and no shot was ever attempted.

I think with all the basketball most of us watch, that call is made against the defender so much that our brains are conditioned that way. So my initial instincts were what I am conditioned to see called. May not be the correct call, but that's my reason to believe it was a defensive foul in real time.

It was very John Stockton-esque, and it was a foul. Not the deciding point of the game though. You have two D1 big man, the ball needed to go them more than it did. Needed to pick up the tempo, if the game is played in the 60's, I like the Breds chances more. It look like Dean Smith's 4 corner at one point.

 

Ron Dawn is still a freaking stud, he has forgot more basketball than I'll ever know, but I did think he got out coached yesterday.
