I don't think anyone would care if these were students who played basketball and were even just average. I've said a million times that no one is complaining about OBI, which has tons of out of state or international students in their dorms. No one is on here talking about how OBI's kids should be excluded from the KHSAA, even though some are great at sports like soccer and cross country. If we're being realistic, let's face it, the only reason anyone cares is because they are good and might take someone else's spotlight.

 

I find it funny that no one is complaining when some white kids move to a Catholic school, but when it's some black kids going to a non-public everyone is losing their minds. Those white kids are just fine because they must have wanted to go to where they went because it's a good school after all and they really care about their academics. Those kids, their parents moved them and they must pay more than their share of taxes, right? Oh yea, we'll give them the assumption that their parents can easily pay for that private school everyone in the area knows about and never call that into question too, even though it's been mentioned tons of time for the black kids (after all, we seem to assume the latter's parents paid more than their fair share of taxes and don't mention anything about that; weird, it seems like it is assumed that they probably pay a ton in taxes and still have all kinds of money to send their kids to private school too).

 

Let's not act like this isn't the case with all the "do they get scholarships???"" and "I don't want my tax money going to…" posts when other posts have talked about kids going to "good" schools that seem pretty expensive for parents just to up and send two kids to, especially after something expensive like moving, with no questions asked. Maybe those schools aren't as good as we think they are or they could charge more or maybe they are getting some kind of "aid" like plenty of other people who regularly go there, but I've never thrown out that assumption because I don't know and really don't care. I'm just pointing out how it seems to be a double standard if we're looking at it objectively.

 

Fact of the matter is, this is just as realistic as anything else if we're all worried about realism.

 

REALLY it has been implied in many comments..... I am BLACK and can identify a race card. AND That's my only issue...... these are KIDS not all bad.... not all dumb.... not all only concerned with sports.

I think you really believe that, but my whole point was that there are none of these questions for the other kids. No posts about, "do they get scholarships" (i.e., they can't afford it), "look at what kind of school Cordia is" (i.e., they don't care about grades), "I don't want my tax money going to" (i.e., again, they can't afford it so you have to foot the bill).

 

Whether or not it's been explicitly stated, I think you can see where I'm coming from when I say these kinds of questions/accusations haven't been thrown around about other transfers until I got rhetorical and started asking them just to illustrate.

I have no problem with a bunch of D1 athletes playing together on a team. I have no problem with kids transferring 100's of miles to a school that provides them with a better situation than they currently have. I have no problem with a coach "attracting" all the talent to one location.

 

I do have a problem with the team then being eligible for KHSAA competition. The above is a club team, and AAU type group. They should play an independent schedule. Play other academies. Play other prep schools. Heck, play KHSAA teams if you want, but at the end of the season they should not be eligible for KHSAA tournaments or awards. JMHO

And to answer your question, I grew up in EKY and want to see the 14th get a chance, especially considering other mountain schools regularly get transfers. I think it's good for the area. See one of my earlier posts about what I think is wrong with the attitudes of EKY high schools sometimes.

Lost in all the shuffle of this discussion: Christen Cunningham did not play last night. He was on a visit… to an Ivy League school. Oh yea, that doesn't fit the narrative about the kids not caring about education though, so it's not really been discussed as much.

Not sure of any of the facts in this case although it at the least looks very fishy but as far as I know it could all be coincidence. However any adults who encourage a kid to transfer to their school knowing that eligibility for that kid might be a question mark is pretty low in my book. The kid moves and then is not eligible and loses a year of playing and can never get that time back. If the kid moves totally on there own accord then if they end up ineligible it is on them but if adults encourage it in any way that kids lost year playing is on the adults and that is shameful in my view.

I think the point LB13 raised is perfectly fair to ask . Wondering if a school is investigated is fair. I just don't get the people who seem so angry about the transfers.

They hear about that school, which is in the same 25 mile radius area of ALL 27 NKY high schools, in the Cincinnati Enquirer and on the TV news.

 

How do kids in Canada, Texas, Mississippi hear about a tiny school in the mountains of EKY..........I can guarantee not in the newspaper or on TV. And I'm sure they just didn't do a google search and by a stroke of lucky find it either.

Okay, so why are there no threads on "How do the Moeves kids pay for the New Cath education"? I could ask plenty of questions about that situation that I'm guessing would get the same 'defense' responses from you. You are kidding yourself if you don't think that their decision was motivated by basketball on some level. Just asking simple questions, looking for a simple answer there too. Here's one that's as simple as I could make it, that would go for everyone: be honest with yourself, is your problem with Cordia really that they are getting good kids who might beat your team, and at root of it all, that's what your problem really is?

 

Also, just because no one has explicitly brought it into the mix, doesn't mean there aren't a lot of (not-so) subtle things people's posts (not trying to single you out, because there are others this speaks to) are implying about "how do they pay for it", "do they get scholarships", and "I don't want my tax money going to…". You should be able to see how I take those to imply that people think they aren't capable of paying for it when other kids are just assumed to be in a better position.

Go ahead and start a thread asking, "How do the Moeves kids pay for the NewCath education"? However, I can help answer it for you. Both parents are practicing catholics and the boys attended catholic grade school until 6th grade, and then financially it wasn’t possible to continue to attend. Two years ago they looked to attend either NewCath or CovCath (mom is a Notre Dame grad), but financially it was not possible. Last year both grandparents past away and this created a means, financially, for the family to move to Capmbell Co. and made it possible to attend NewCath.

 

Was there decision motivated by basketball on some level? I'm not there parents so I can't say, but both boys play on the same summer hoops & baseball teams with several NewCath players. So this probably helped in this decision.

Sure, but ultimately there are people that take stances that shock me all of the time. I'm sure this will rear its head again if / when Cordia wins the 14th.
