But IF I said you're right, let's transition that same philosophy to bball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, etc. Let them all in! Does that sound crazy or fine to you? Because basically what you are saying is do away with district titles and only use district games to seed the next level. Then lets do that in every sport! My daughter would love to have an opportunity to play another game. She deserves and extra game. She deserves a chance to play in the state, regardless of how good they are or what their record is. Lets advance all district teams and play it out on the court!

For the others that say in the other sports, they all qualify for post season, so does football. And the elimination process starts when district play starts. So lets do away with all district competition in all sports and only use it to seed the state tournament. That sounds crazy huh? But I will use the exact same arguments that everyone is using on here to justify it. Answer your own questions by applying it to another sport and tell me why we can't apply it to all sports. You can't because the idea of letting all those teams advance in the other sports sounds ludacris! That's how I feel about football. Ludacris to let that many teams in a STATE TOURNAMENT!

 

I know it can be argued, but all other sports do have a district tournament to play in before moving on in the region. Technically not apples to oranges, but close enough, especially when you consider that every team DOES get a chance to possibly play in the state tournament...the district and regional tourney's in all other sports are in effect elimination playoff games...you have to win to advance. And you get a chance no matter what your record is during the regular season. Also when you consider that there are so few football games in a season, adding another couple games isn't a huge deal. I'd rather have too many teams in, than leave a good team out. A number 3 or 4 team seems to always make a nice run in the playoffs, and when they do, it's a great story.

Anderson County also made a run to the finals as a 3 or 4 seed in 5A, two years ago. I believe it is more likely to happen in the larger classes as the small classes are top heavy dominated.

It is concerning about some of the travel teams have to pay for. That would be my only concern, is it worth the trip say for Boone County to travel or Jackson Co to go to Belfry

That's exactly what I said. 2 teams advance after the district process is complete. Yes, every team is eligible to compete in The district, just like football. Football also has a district tournament, but because of the nature of the game, it's played out during the season in a round robin format. They determine who advances and who doesn't, as well as the seeding. Just like Bball. The difference is 4 4 teams advance out of the football district process and 2 out of every other sport.

 

Everyone gets caught up in the fact that the district processes are different. The ONLY reason they are is because you can't play football games in back to back days. Therefore the PROCESS is spread out over the season. Both district processes are intended to do the EXACT SAME THING. Wrong. The regular season football district games are not part of the post season playoffs. Regular season games are not the district tournament. In most districts every team in the district is in the post season. That is not an elimination tournament.

 

Since some football teams do not qualify for the post season playoffs there are four teams per district (with a couple exceptions) who qualify for the playoffs. In other sports all teams qualify for the post season tournament/playoffs. I guess the other sports are more watered down than football because all teams play in their post season tournament. At least in football a handful of teams do not qualify for post season playoffs.

 

Regular season is regular season. Post season is post season. The basketball district tournament is post season play and includes all teams.

 

You and I are not going to agree on this. I divide post season in all sports into one category. Since a few football teams do not make post season play, you want to include regular season district football games as part of post season play. I disagree. You also don't want to include the basketball district tournament as part of the basketball post season tournament. I see the district tournament in basketball as the start of the playoffs/tournament. Honestly, I don't see how anyone could say the basketball district tournaments are not the start of the state tournament. Someone posted the voting last year, I was pretty shocked by some of the ways schools voted. Most of the schools that typically lose in the first round voted for a four team format. That surprised me a bit.

VOR, if I may, I think what RCC9 is trying to say is that there are teams "eliminated" from continuing on in the postseason, in the regular season, when there's more than 4 teams in a district. The instance that has been mentioned already, Cooper-Grant County, was pretty much a "play-in" game. You win, you're in. You lose, you stay home. I think both of you are saying the same thing, but looking at it from different points of view (winners vs. losers). For the winners, it's a game that allowed you to qualify for the "official tournament". For the losers, though, it was an elimination game...hence RCC9's contention that it's basically a playoff game during the regular season.
