I don't have children in school, or grandchildren, so I'm not worried about little Johnny or Suzy. I love the Camels, I've been going to Camels games for 25 years since I moved here. I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly. More ugly than bad. So many people say, if you want a chance to be in the playoffs, step up and work harder to get there. With that, many want to shorten the season for those teams who are trying to improve. At Campbell County, they are working hard to climb out of the rut which was created after many, many, many years of complacency by previous administrations on sports. With that much more was lost, not just games. It's tough to get to the top. You need support for building a quality program, from administration, parents, community. That, along with quality coaching, good athletes, some TRADITION, a winning mindset and some good geography. I'd say 7 out of 8 of the aforementioned have taken a hit at Campbell County in years past. Things are looking up, with a long, long way to go. Even though The Camels haven't been on the bottom of the heap the past few years, I do remember when they were.

 

Let them play. If you don't like the first round games, or even the second round. Take your family out to eat or see a movie, or both during those rounds. Then jump back in at the round where your time isn't being wasted.

No, the district process in basketball and football would not be the same/similar if they changed the rules in football to two teams per district qualifying for post season. For them to be the same, basketball would have to use their regular season district games to determine the top two teams in the district and there would be no district tournaments. The top two basketball teams in each district at the end of the regular season would qualify for the regional and all the other basketball teams would not play any post season games.

 

Didn't ask if the process would be the same...I asked would the OUTCOMES of the processes be the same? We all know why the processes can't be the same. Because they would if they could. But we all know there is a district process in both sports. The "how" its handled may be different because of the nature, but the intent of both processes are the same. So if they would only take 2 teams, the district process in football would produce the same results as the district process in bball. Today, they send too many teams forward.

 

In Bball, it would be the same thing as saying "ok, we're going to have the district tournament and the top 4 teams will advance. That sounds rediculous right? That's the way I feel about football. Why have any district process for elimination if you're going to advance 4 teams out of a 4-5 team district???? Either let them all in and call it an open state tournament or make it more of an honor to get in like every other sport in the world!

 

So someone from School A is 1-9. 20 years from now are they going to be sitting around saying "Yep, we made the state playoffs my senior year!" Nope, because it's nothing special to make the playoffs. It used to be, but now only for a very few because they let too many in! We still talk about who got in and who was out from my days of playing. We talk about "yea, I remember that! School B was very good, but lost that game to school C and got eliminated. Man, that was a tough district! " That's because state playoff spots were earned and people were proud to just survive the district! Today, it's just "don't finish last!"

 

I'm okay either way, but lets not pretend that it's an honor to make the state playoffs and the kids love it. For those that "get to play another game", I can live with that. And there is nothing wrong with it if that's what the majority wants. But 10 years from now, that can is going to be just that "just another game". And it might be one they want to forget, rather than remember. If they earned their way in, they would have the memory of all the ups and downs during the season that allowed them to get in the playoffs.

My argument has nothing to do on whether I want to watch first round games or not. It's all about work for the reward. It should be an accomplishment, priviledge, goal to just make the playoffs. Not a given...as long as you "don't finish last". You can make strides with everything you're talking about even if more teams were eliminated. What if you were 0-10 one year? The next year you are 3-7. The next year you're 6-4. And the next year you are 10-0. In today's world, you could make the playoffs with all those records! But what kind of excitement and accomplishment would it be in those 6-4 and 10-0 years by making the playoffs from accomplishing a goal of making it through districts! You finally arrived! There was a goal set and now you've acheived the first step. You can build off of it! What goal did the 0-10 team acheive by making the state playoffs? What incentive do they have to come back next year and fight thru their district!! They don't! Because they are going to make the playoffs no matter what! That make no sense to me.

 

Either let them all in or make it worth something. You have 10 other games to build a program on.

 

How exciting was the CC/Dixie game? Imagine if that game impacted whether one of those teams would make the playoffs!!! Now how exciting would that game have been. In that case, Dixie would be out right now!! Would that stink for Dixie, yes. But they would know what they had to do before the season started. They would have had goals set around the district games. They would have maybe done some things differently, rather than not show them something for later. Who knows, but it would have been very exciting and more meaningful if that was on the line...like it used to be.

Perhaps they have six classes in order to get the most teams possible into the post season.

 

I say baseball is definitely the most difficult to win. Basketball is second and football the easiest of those 3 sports. I think baseball and basketball should be classed. I love the Sweet Sixteen and think we could find a way for there to still be a Sweet Sixteen. But let's not get into all that in this thread.

I can't answer for you because you don't consider football's district play as the actual first round of the post season elimination (when it really is). Yes, it's determined in the regular season, but it's the first elimination process and all teams are eligible prior to playing the first district game. Just like bball. Bballs first round of elimination is the district tournament. All teams are eligible, just like football. The outcome of the district tournament in bball produce the same results of the outcomes of district play in football. It's the first round of elimination for both sports. Fball allows 4 of the 5 teams to advance and bball allows 2!

 

Forget about what they call it. Forget about when it's played. Forget about how the teams advance. The fact is that once teams start any competition that starts eliminating teams for the next round, that is considered a post season determiner. So just because football does it during the season and allows more teams to advance, doesn't mean that it's still not the a post season determiner. The ONLY difference is they let 4 teams pass.

They don't need 6 classes to get everyone into the post season. They already let them all in anyway! Heck, they could go to 3 classes with 20 team districts and we'd want to let 19 of the 20 in the state tournament!

VOR, I hope there are no hard feelings. We have agreed on many other subjects and even in different sport threads. We just don't agree on this one! It's great debate and helps my day go faster!
