I have no problem with you or where you played or coached...I think there is more character to be gained in trying your best against a team like Trinity in the playoffs even if you get blown out then never getting the opportunity to play that level of opponent and get to test your self against the best. You look at this from the top down, look at it from the middle or even bottom up...wouldn't you want a chance to say you played and gave your best against the best?

Maybe it's different because of where I came from....but where I stand now, I would not want a playoff opportunity that I didn't really earn. It's not much different in my professional sales life now.

I agree, every team goes to districts in bball. How many move on from district play in bball...2. How many move on from football district play...4.

When exactly, was SK in the title game...last time we beat them, was in the first round of the playoffs and it was 72-0...

In 2009, SK with mostly the same players lost in Regional final to St. X 48-34. In that game at St. X, Miles Simpson was hurt in the third quarter with the game tied and SK driving. Could of been a different outcome. St. X then "hammered trinity in the Final 2 weeks later! Just saying!!

2013 Class 4A Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl - this tournament is to determine the state champ. Just like the sweet 16 in basketball. One tournament to determine the state champ! In bball, there are 16 teams that do that, regardless of class. In Football, there are 32 teams per class...that play in the STATE TOURNAMENT.

But that Simon Kenton team was undefeated at the time....they "earned" their right, and almost overcame.

Purely semantics RCC9. You do know that during the football playoffs there are district and regional championships won, right? Let's simplify this down for you and look at it as post season play. How do each of the sports handle participation in post season play? Obviously, the various sports allow all teams to play in post season games - baseball, basketball, volleyball, etc.

 

I really don't understand why people think football should be different than other sports. Why should football be the one sport that does not allow teams to play post season games? If you make the argument that every sport needs to change post season play, I can buy that argument. That is the only legitimate argument against the current post season format in football.

So does anyone really believe that the only thing that stops every team in the state from being an elite team, ie; Trinity, St. Xavier, Highlands, Bowling Green, ect...... Is lack of hard work and desire to be better.

Let me preface my response by stating I really like high school football. It's my favorite spectator sport.

 

We have this discussion every year, and every year I say the same thing: Kentucky football has too many classes and let too many teams in the playoffs.

 

Every year people bring up baseball, basketball, etc. and their postseasons. That's rubbish. Those sports have one class, but more schools participating. Someone explain that one to me. No one ever explains it.

 

It's far easier to be mediocre in football but still make the state championship, or even win one, than any other sport. why has football been given that crutch? That's a problem to me.

 

Cut football back to four classes, and allow only the top two teams from each district to make the playoffs and you'd really have something IMO. Cut it back to four classes and allow four teams from each district in, and it would be a little watered down but it would be good enough.

 

Or you can treat football like every other team sport and cut it down to the bare bones of one or two classes and have an apples v apples argument. In that case, I'd say let them play.

I'm saying its similar to the other sports. They both have district play as their first round if elimination, correct? After district play is complete in all sports, teams are eliminated, correct? In football, 4 teams move on, correct? In any other sport, 2 teams move on, correct? What am I missing? Football does have a district tournament to eliminate teams. Because of the nature if football (not being able to play games on back to back days like other sports) they play the district during the regular season. Just like any other sport teams get eliminated. The only difference is 4 teams move on in football compared to 2 in other sports. I'm not making any play for the other sports at all. I'm simply saying that in football 4 move on after the district is decided and some get cut.

 

And those that want to say that in the other sports, all teams make post season or playoffs via everyone is eligible for district play, again I say football is not different, it's exactly the same. Every team gets their chance to play in the district (which is the first round of elimination for football). Some teams are eliminated by district play. But everyone is eligible. Your record determines who moves on! The difference is 4 teams move on once the district is decided vs 2 in other sports. I'm saying they are a very similar format, but not similar in the number of teams that move on. If football only allowed 2 teams to advance, like the other sports, they'd be almost exactly the same.

 

Every year in all the other sports, very good teams are eliminated in district play and don't get a chance to move on. Wouldn't they like a chance to play another game for a the same reasons everyone states in here for football. The fact is, only 2 move on after district. 4 move on after districts in football and its too many.

 

If it was feasible for football to play a district tourney over a weekend at the end of the season, they would. However, you can't physically do that in football so they back their way of determining the district into the season games. They are ALL eligible, just like other sports.
