Anybody getting trophies for losing in the first 3 rounds of the playoffs? The attitude from those wanting to limit the number of teams wreaks of the superiority complex IMO of many fans. Remember the coaches and AD voted for this...the only people that seem to have a problem with settling it on the field are elitist that think playoffs should be 2-3 rounds and get on to basketball.

 

What harm does it do for teams to play more football?

 

Unlike 20 or 30 years ago making the playoffs isn't a big deal to these kids so it's not like your giving them a trophy, they know they have to win 3 games just to win the Region! Then 2 more to win state!

 

Cut back the teams and everyone in the playoffs gets a trophy as a Reg Winner or Runner-up...now teams have to earn that with wins...this is in no way "Giving everybody a trophy"

Grossly over matched teams, have no business being rewarded with a playoff run...I'm sorry.

If you go to 4 Classes (I know, I know)...then made 8 expanded regions/districts in each class, evenly spread - you would have mostly 7 teams in each. Go to 2 3 week tournaments - Regional and State.

 

With 7 teams give the #1 seed a bye first week with a playoff game between 6/7 seeds. Winner gets #1 seed (region regular season winner) the next week. Other side of the bracket is the 2/5 and 3/4 games.

 

Advantages:

 

1. All teams do make the playoffs.

2. All week 1 games have chance to be competitive since the cellar dwellers get to have at each other. The 2/5 and 3/4 games should be better matched.

3. #1 seed gets to rest 1 week as reward for being regular season winners. And gets an easy road to finals of region.

 

Most assume that having all the teams in the playoffs leads to a more watered down or blow out games. As the structure above shows it is possible to get all the teams in, get the lower echelon teams a chance at a playoff win - albeit a killer game in week 2 and have more overall competitive games.

 

The current playoff format is stale and way to predictable.

Yes there are blowouts every year and every year there are 3 and 4 seeds that make a run.

 

Every time there is an objectionable call by an official the court is to "Let them settle it on the field/court".

 

College football is the best example, no one is happy that there is not a playoff to determine a champion.

 

What about teams in a 3 way tie for district championship where the team playing the easiest schedule is rewarded with tie breaker points and gets top seed.

 

No one worries about first round blow outs in Soccer, Softball, Basketball, Volleyball and every other sport in Ky High Schools...where EVERY team makes the playoffs and in many cases can lose a game and still advance to the next round.

 

High School Football is great, there's not but a very small handful of kids that would rather miss the playoffs than get blown out but get a chance to play one last time...all would rather have one more chance to play and walk on that field with their brothers. Unlike other sports unless you go to college and play, HS is the last time you'll ever get a chance to play your sport. Basketball Rec leagues have guys 50 years old still playing, softball is the same way...not many if any Rec tackle football leagues out there, this is the last time many will every put on the pads.

 

It is a shame that some people get on their high and might horse and look down their noses on those teams that don't meet their magical standards...to quote a GREAT MOVIE..."Let them PLAY!!!"

They are looking for the top maybe 15-20 teams or the top 5-6%. NO ONE would want to see the bottom 50% be in a playoff system. So your college football example doesn't seem to be a very good comparison.

 

As far as district ties, there are tiebreakers for everything. Usually "points scored" or "points against" against your district opponents (or something similar). You would know that the tiebreaker is going in. It's not a surprise.

 

The other sports have districts and regions that qualify you for a state tournament. We've talked about this at length. District play in football doesn't seem to really have any bearing, other than seeding the state playoffs, unless you happen to have 5 teams in the district. Football used to be just like the other sports when they acutally eliminated teams from advancing with the distict outcomes.

 

As far as one last chance to play a game. Well I'm sure they would want to play "one last game", but shouldn't they have to earn that one last game? Then maybe it should be two and out or even play the seeding all the way out so we no exactly where everyone stands. So if Boyd loses, they will play the loser of X and X. And if they lose again, they will play a seeding game against the loser the two other teams to determine what place in the state they acutally came in. There are tons of different ways to get "one more game". C'mon, we're talking about the state playoffs. If you are truly interested in "playing it out on the field, then why not let them all in? Maybe that's what you're saying. But that doesn't seem like you earned your state playoff spot and that's not really a privilege.

Plug in any mismatch you want and I gurantee you the majority of kids would rather not do that. If they had even a chance to win, then maybe. But there are several 1st round matchups where teams have 0 chjance to win, unless the other team's buss breaks down. That's not the state tournament to me.

:deadhorse: Yes we have had this discussion...but where we differ is that you don't think the district tourney or even region tourney are playoffs? Every team regardless of their record goes to the basketball district tourney making the regular season games against district opponents meaning less as many district seed based on a blind draw.

 

To be consistent from what you want for football and what would happen in basketball you would play the regular season and only two teams in a basketball district would advance to the elimination playoffs.

 

But I know you will never understand this because you don't think the district tournament count as post season play.

Nope, I think they are saying that it's similar to this year when all the top teams are in the other bracket. Occasionally a team may make a run and you can bring up a FEW instances, but that isn't very many compared to the number of chances. What is that less than 1% in the timeframe we are talking about?

I have no problem with you or where you played or coached...I think there is more character to be gained in trying your best against a team like Trinity in the playoffs even if you get blown out then never getting the opportunity to play that level of opponent and get to test your self against the best. You look at this from the top down, look at it from the middle or even bottom up...wouldn't you want a chance to say you played and gave your best against the best?
