Why do people use hashtags on facebook, in text messages, etc.? I thought they were only useful on Twitter.

Half the time on Facebook it's because their accounts are linked. #twitterpoststofacebook

I am of the opinion that they should stay on Twitter. Unless, of course, the hashtag looks something like this: #fatjason.

90% of the people I see doing this are instantly removed from my viewing experience on Facebook.

That's how it is with me. With that said, I rarely hashtag anything.

Wow. Some of you guys are overly sensitive. I love the hashtag phenomenon.

I don't use hashtags in anything but Twitter, but I'm not sure why it would bother anyone.

I thought I read somewhere recently that Facebook was going to begin using hashtags, just like Twitter?

Actually Facebook recently announced that hashtags will work on Facebook as well. I'm not sure if it is enabled yet but if not it should be any time now. I don't think it will work quite as well because I think a search for a hashtag will only bring up its use by your friends but hashtags are not just for Twitter anymore.

I use them all over the place.. #CallMeSilly

It's just the latest cultural fad. You can't be "cool" unless you use them all over the place. I agree with those who say it is super-annoying to see people (mostly kids) use those things in situations where they have no purpose whatsoever.
