I do understand what Spin and SV are saying but I disagree. I don't care who is gay or straight but it is a relevant act for an 'active' NBA player to admit they are gay. I say 'active' because at 34 as a mediocre NBA player he likely has very little time left in the league. If any. He likely just ruined any chance at furthering his career.

 

We know that there are gay pro athletes but I have always been intrigued by the reaction the day someone comes out. I'd rather see a big name player do it so we can get a true reaction. A guy like Collins will disappear and we'll never see him again. It'd be a whole new ballgame if it was Paul Pierce.

For those of you that are waiting for a star player to come out. Do you think that player would be treated any different by his teammates than say they would a Jason Collins? Would being a star change how your teammates would react toward you?

It's pitiful but what needs to happen is more and more athletes coming out that way they can crush whatever agenda some have with it. If he is the only one that announces then it will have no affect on anything but if more follow in his footsteps then I may cause a change in a positive way.

I have never understood why people have to "come out". And I don't want to hear the psycho babble about the stigma, yada, yada. It's old news and the culture has become so pro gay that it's not a shocker anymore. I never understood why idiots like Wilt had to announce his sexual escapades either. He's gay, let's have a parade.

Not sure how you can say it's not a big deal, when we have ZERO active players in the NFL, MLB, NHL or NBA that are out until this point. You can't say there are no gay players in pro-sports, because there have been several players come out once they retired-- that clearly indicates a pressure of some kind to hide it.

 

For other celebrities, it isn't really a big deal any more. The stigma for your Neil Patrick Harris or Cooper Anderson is mostly gone, but that's only because others had to risk their careers to be out, and some had their hand forced by blackmail or tabloids.

 

And if you think that these athletes and celebrites coming out doesn't matter, tell that to some frightened and bullied queer kid who could really use someone to look up to and is maybe trying to find the courage not to hide who he is from his friends and family.

Absolutely. Collins is on the Wizards and irrelevant as a player. Let's wait and see if he has a team next season. If it was John Wall this story would be even bigger than Tebow's release. Guys on the Wizards probably could not care less about Collins. If it was John Wall they would have to care.

Athletes and celebs believe they have to announce they are gay so they can live their life freely and openly. Imagine the news if someone hadn't announced was linked to being gay in some way. It's going to be news either way.

 

I'd look at it as the same way as when people get excited when someone famous speaks out for something political or religious that their fans agree with. People get behind that kind of stuff. Can go a long way helping young people who feel there is something wrong with them. Even if you believe the times have changed enough that this no longer matters, a lot of people still feel the need to hide.

Exactly my point. Your friend should be allowed to live his life without fear of repercussion. Not only are there more athletes needed to come out but at least one has to be a superstar. Preferably one in his prime and not on the way to retirement.

I think it's of no relevance to announce. I don't understand the difference in Wall or Collins announcing it if it was true. Either way, the game is about getting buckets. If my gay center gets em, so be it.

To be quite honest, the only thing that interests me about this whole deal is if Jarron is also gay. The twins are identical, if Jarron is not gay, I'd love to hear the defense genetically of "born that way". If he is also gay, then I think they need to submit some of that DNA for research.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Pierce is a 35 year old 15 year NBA vet. He's not got much of his career left either. While this does represent some progress and is something that will be celebrated by the gay community, I would put much more stock in a much younger gay athlete coming out as being a courageous move. Can you image an NBA early entry prospect coming out prior to the draft?
