To be quite honest, the only thing that interests me about this whole deal is if Jarron is also gay. The twins are identical, if Jarron is not gay, I'd love to hear the defense genetically of "born that way". If he is also gay, then I think they need to submit some of that DNA for research.

My Dad's sisters are identical twins, one has severe down-syndrome, the other doesn't. Just because you're a twin doesn't mean you're an exact clone of the other.

So what do you think their reaction would be? Would he be shunned? Would they not shower with him? Would they ask for him to be traded? I don't think he would be treated any different. I have gay co-workers. Their sexual preference makes no difference to me.

 

I think with Collins they won't care and they'll say the PC things knowing he'll likely be released or playing somewhere else next season. I think the whole dynamic changes when the team's star player comes out of the closet. They'd be forced to have to deal with it. How would they react? I have no clue but I'd hope for the best. I just think to get a true reaction it has to come from a relevant player and not the guy who is on the team because "they can't teach 7 feet tall".

I'm talking about genetic markers. Not genetic defect like trisomy 21. Study genetics for awhile then get back to me.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Pierce is a 35 year old 15 year NBA vet. He's not got much of his career left either. While this does represent some progress and is something that will be celebrated by the gay community, I would put much more stock in a much younger gay athlete coming out as being a courageous move. Can you image an NBA early entry prospect coming out prior to the draft?

 

He's still the leader and most important Celtic since Larry Bird. That's still way more relevant than Jason Collins. I'd put more stock in a younger more established athlete coming out, like Derrick Rose, but Paul Pierce is one that I'd be intrigued to see the reaction to also. More so than Jason Collins. Jason Collins has got us talking but he's still a small fish in a big pond.

Nothing. That's not what I am saying. I am talking about teammate reaction. If you think all his teammates will welcome him with open arms then I have some oceanfront property in Danville to sell you. Real cheap.

 

Collins' teammates already treat him differently than John Wall. How do you think they'll treat him now? If Wall says he's gay he'd get better treatment than Collins IMO. Are you catching my drift now?

The fact that some people make a big deal out of him coming out, and saying he shouldn't have done that, or asking why he did it. Then that is a reason for coming out. When the day comes that someone comes out and everyone says something like "oh that's nice, I don't care if you are straight or gay" or "I knew and I don't care", that is when it will not be a big deal anymore.

 

I agree with Ram02 54, kids need people to look up to, and kids need to know they can be anything they want, and that they don't have to hide.

Maybe he thinks like this, and came out so he could claim discrimination against the club when they let him go.

This situation will not be a useful litmus test as to how the NBA would react to an active player coming out. Collins only appeared in 6 games this season and average less than a point per game. If he doesn't get picked up next year, no way can that be blamed on him coming out.
