Things you miss most about being young?

Featured Replies

Young as in "a kid of the 70s:"

Whiffle ball in the backyard

Collecting baseball cards

Hanging out at night with your buddies in the neighborhood during the summer

The butterflies over calling a girl for the first time

Getting to watch Johnny Carson on weekends and then during the summer

Sweating my skinny rear end off in a non-air-conditioned house

Sleeping 3 to a room in a room big enough for 1

Kool-aid

Yoo-hoo

Jumping your Huffy bikeover dirt ramps

Strat-o-Matic baseball

Bas-Ket

Playing my Ohio Player "Fire" 45 over and over and over and....

I could go on and on.

Playing wiffle or rubber ball home run derby dawn to dusk, if the ball went past the grapevines it was a homer

Playing basketball on a narrow driveway with the netless hoop bent forwards hanging from the side of the garage

Listening to my grandfather tell stories, man I miss him

Dumping a small bag of salted peanuts into an RC Cola or NEHI grape and knowing it was fine dining

Going to school to see how much I could get by with before I got swatted (got swatted three times, so got by with a lot)

Riding my bike to go everywhere in Okolona

Making up games to play outside and we always worked it out, sometimes with punches but always ending the day laughing with my buddies

Listening to 45's on my little record player and WKLO radio

Watching "This Week in Baseball" on Saturday afternoon (way before Sports Center)

Mom's spaghetti and meatballs

The last day of school before summer break riding the bus home and screaming at the top of our lungs

Sunday's fried chicken lunch after church

I loved working too. The reason I retired early was to take care of my parents that were not in good health. My dad passed away 1 1/2 years ago at age 93. My mom is 85 and not in good health. Thought I loved my work and miss the kids, my family needed me more. I don't regret it.

Sorry to hear that. I think that is a "perk" so to speak as living close or in the town your parents live. You are there to take care of them when they get old, like they took care of you when you were young. I'm sure it's not as joyful, but I know it means a lot to them to have you around.

I do not live in the same town as them. I live 1 1/2 hours away. Why it was important that I could go to EKY anytime I wanted and needed to and stay with them days at a time. When you have a full time job, you just can't do that. Life is too short. Enjoy your job, you never know what the future holds.

Energy

Knowing every baseball player and card I had

Saturday morning cartoons

Sleeping with my mom and dad

Whiffle ball

Not knowing the horrible stuff I know now

The world not being a pure hell to live in.

Catching butterfly's

Laying kickball and kick the can at night

Catching crawdads in the creek

Waking up in the morning and finding that what's supposed to be limber is stiff; and vice-versa.

My dignity haha just kidding.

I really miss high school. I really miss college. But going back to the younger years, I miss the countless hours playing in the cul-de-sac. Whether it was Home Run Derby, Kickball, FourSquare, Baseball, Football, Manhunt (kinda weird saying that now), and etc. Also miss countless hours shooting hoops alone, while listening to music on a Friday night.

I miss the college girls. I also miss not being in debt.

I'm 22 and I'm already in some massive debt! Pharmacy school ain't cheap! :D

I could go on but just a few:

Playing, all day and never being tired. I think we played everything at some point, even hockey. Wiffleball, tennis ball, basketball, bike riding was even a competition, backyard football, man that was fun.

Manhunt on any summer night made my week.

Riding my bike all over town without a care in the world.

Summer 3 on 3 basketball tourny's after dark, with the radio or cassette player on.

Leaving on the first day of vacation with my family and friends group we had.

Summers where my biggest decision was whether or not I was going to the pool the next day, and trying to figure out who all was going to be there so I could choose wisely.

These days two sounds bring back great memories.......

1. Metal baseball spikes on concrete.......

2. Tires on gravel........reminds me of the drive in.

Being able to dunk! I miss playing basketball 3-4 nights a week like when I was 18-22yo. We played league a couple of nights a week and seemed to always be able to find an "open" gym that we could play at.

I miss my brand new Mustang GT from 1988 that I got myself as a birthday present.

I could also could go on all night on the things that I miss from my younger days.

That said, at that age I didn't know God, I didn't know the love of my life and I didn't know the love that a parent feels for a child. I wouldn't go back to "not knowing" those things for anything.

This.
