2013 40th District Tournament Preview

On paper the 40th District seems to be the 10th Region District with the least suspense. Happy Osborne's Montgomery County Indians have stood atop the Regional rankings for the entirety of the regular season. In District play the Indians have gone 6-0, winning by an average margin of 34 points per game in those outings. George Rogers Clark is the #2 seed, finishing District play at 4-2. The Cardinals are under-sized and certainly lack the talent they possessed in recent years. Still, Scott Humphrey's team plays its trademark sticky defense and have proven to be a tough opponent in the last several games. Paris & Bourbon County both finished 1-5 within the District, but the Greyhounds won the draw that enabled them to receive the tourney's #3 seed. Geoff Cody's roster is the Region's youngest, but does contain quite a bit of talent. Robert Goodman's Colonels entered this season with high expectations, but have struggled to meet them.

The Pairings (all games at George Rogers Clark)

#1 Montgomery County vs. #4 Bourbon County- Feb. 18th 6:00 pm

#2 George Rogers Clark vs. #3 Paris- Feb. 18th 7:45 pm

Championship Game- Feb. 20th 7:00 pm

Players To Watch

It would be criminal if this list started with anyone other than Omar Prewitt, the Montgomery County swingman who has been the 10th's top talent all season. Prewitt leads the team in both scoring (23.3 ppg) & rebounding (8.7 rpg). But the William & Mary bound Mr. Basketball candidate is far from a one-man show, as the Indians have a dynamite pair of guards in senior Tyler Jones & junior Bryan Wallace. Junior forward Darius Jones is third on the team in scoring & second in rebounding.

Bourbon County guard Snoop Johnson has been posting gaudy scoring numbers all year in an otherwise disappointing season for the Colonels. Just a little over two weeks ago, the junior torched the nets by scoring 48 points in a double overtime loss at Western Hills.

A pair of freshmen lead Paris--forwards Kobe Garrard (16.7 ppg) & James Clark (15 ppg). The 'Hounds have also received solid contributions from junior guard Cameron Downey (13 ppg).

George Rogers Clark is a defensive-minded squad, but possesses an outstanding talent down low in junior big man Khmarkis Blanton. Sophomore Malachi Israel & junior Riley Caudill are also consistent producers for the Cards.

Our Predictions

Montgomery County over Bourbon County

George Rogers Clark over Paris

Montgomery County over George Rogers Clark for the championship

I think the Paris/GRC matchup could be a decent game. GRC should be the clear favorite, but if Paris can get hot and get the game into the 60s like the first time they played it could spell trouble for the Cards who struggle at times offensively.

Has either Paris or Bourbon Co. made the region out of the 40th district?

No. Since realignment in 2006, Clark Co. has won the district and Montgomery Co. the runner up every year.

GRC just held #6 Ranked Holmes to 43 points. Don't think the Cards will allow Paris to score in the 60's. GRC has to get some scoring going. Defense is there, just can't seem to score at times.
