January 12, 201313 yr So I've got a question. Like I've mentioned before I've started the C25K process which consists of running 3 days a week 30 minutes at a time. Was planning on doing this Wed's,Fri,Sunday after my lifting workouts. With time constraints I'm either going to have to get up and to the gym atleast 45 minutes earlier or maybe split my workout in two and do weights in the am before work and cardio/running in the PM after work only on those 3 days. My other days would still be the same with primarily lifting in the morning. Was wondering if you all had any feedback as to whether or not splitting it up is bad or good, as well as whether or not cardio or weights are better in the AM or PM. I've read some stuff on this myself that suggests that lifting may be better in the PM because of your body's core temperature being higher at that time but to be honest I prefer lifting in the AM. Just wondering if you all had any insight/suggestions? If there's anything I've learned it's these 2 things. 1. Everyone is different. What works for me might not always work for you. Try different things, give it time to see results and change if need be. 2. Probably the most important...the human body is an amazing machine. It is amazing what it will adapt to and what it can handle. What ever you do, push yourself every work out. When lifting, always lift heavier then the last time. When doing cardio, push yourself just a little harder then you think your body can handle. You will amaze yourself at what you are capable of doing.
January 12, 201313 yr Put simply, studies suggest that conditioning work done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach will burn off fat at a high rate. Your body isn't using glucose as its main energy source. It is using fat. So even something like a Gatorade will effect it. Once the glucose is produced it will then be used as fuel instead of your body's fat stores. So sticking to water prior to training would be advised. It also depends on goals and the type of conditioning you're doing. If you're actually doing sprint workouts then you would want to do it in the morning and have some hours before you weight train. After something intense you'll need time for the CNS to recover. If you're just hitting the treadmill or doing something similar in intensity then it really won't make much of a difference if you weight train first.
January 13, 201313 yr Author Was talking to a friend and considering training for the Flying Pig mini. Before I sign up I want to take a look at a training schedule to see if I could be ready in time. Right now I can run about 2 (slow) miles without walking. Anybody have a link that gives a suggested training schedule?
January 13, 201313 yr Author ^Never mind. Found a 10 week training schedule that requires you to be able to run for 30 min. before you begin the 2 weeks.
January 13, 201313 yr Downloaded an app today that is for sit ups. It has you do them 3 days a week for eight weeks I think. I've never really done anything but run in my past. I have a nice total gym type equipment but have no clue what a good workout plan would be.

I think that's what many of us on this thread are looking for--a good workout plan for themselves.
January 14, 201313 yr Just completed day 2 of the sit up program. Didn't realize I would actually have to push this hard this early. It's been too many years.

January 14, 201313 yr Today was pretty intense. I've structure my routine for the next 6-8 weeks to be 5 days starting with either chest and back or tris and bis. Do legs, lower back and core the other two days. Then on the 5 do a circuit training style implementing some superset tendencies. Went from bench straight to back rows for 3 sets, then did tricep push downs straight to pull ups for 3 sets each, then curls straight to dips with the 3 sets each, lower back lift straight to sit-ups and the. Some shoulder stuff to finish up. I then did week 2 day 1 of C25K for 2.5 miles and then jump roped 2 sets for speed and called it a day. My shirt was soaked from neck to bottom. Also when I got home I measured my waste. I'm down 2 inches to 35.5 exhaled right around my belly button.
January 14, 201313 yr Author Do you have a link? How to train for a marathon or half marathon At the bottom of the page is a 10 week schedule for beginners. Says you should be able to run for 30 min. before you start the program, so I'm going to work on that over the next week or so and then start. I mentioned it to my daughter, and she wants to do the mini also. She runs cross country and swims so she is in MUCH better shape than me. But it's going to be a great shared experience to finish out her senior year!

I was an athlete in hs and early college. 4 knee surgeries and 8 years of not playing sports later....... I know it's going to take sometime.
January 14, 201313 yr I started working out and watching my diet a lot more back in September. I have lost nearly 40 pounds which I'm happy about. Ideally, I'd like to take another thirty off and hope to by near the end of the year.
January 14, 201313 yr Author I'm going to start C25K tomorrow. Anyone ever completed it ? I just liked it up. Looks interesting. I like how it requires just the 3 days a week of running. Gives you options for the other days if you are injury prone.
