I think I should have phrased that as "only sells Beverly International". I think she has both the casseine and whey. What my Mom has is the UMP.

Isn't that company located in NKY?

Yes, Cold Spring.

This will get deeper than you probably are looking for? When are you planning on taking it?

If you are taking it as a stop gap b/n breakfast and lunch (or meal #2 and #5 for people who eat 6 meals per day) you want a Casseine based protein powder. It breaks down much slower and is digested into your blood stream longer (leaving you feeling "fuller" longer.) If you are taking it before your workout, you want Whey. That will breakdown quicker. You want a scoop of that w/ an orange or apple about 15-45 min. before you star working out and another right after you finish with a glass of chocolate milk. That will aid recovery and get the aminos to your muscles quicker as the blood rushes to them to repair the damage that they sustained due to lifting.

Other than that, you want your protein from lean meats, fish, and chicken (meat or eggs). If you eat almonds, or healthy fats you'll get about 6g/serving there and even oatmeal has 6 gs per serving, but those will be "incomplete" proteins. Eat fat free or low fat cottage cheese before bed w/ some green vegetables if you can. That will help as well.

Thanks, actually this answers my question. Sounds like I need Casseine for breakfast and non workout days and Whey after workouts.

Your first and best option is food. If you are set on a supplement then Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey is a great one. Be care buying anything at GNC though, it's easy to over pay, even with their gold card scam. bodybuilding.com, dpsnutrition.com, supplementwarehouse.com, massnutrition.com are all good sites. For a 5lb container don't pay more then $52 (+tax, shipping, whatever). Another good one but more expensive is beverly international. I've never personally tried them but have never heard a bad thing. The main thing to watch is whatever you buy make sure it's protein only and not a bunch of other crap added to it.

Thanks for letting me know about the websites, I would've overpaid for sure. I'll check em out.

Look at the label. Some will have both. The first listed in the ingredients is the most prevelant.

UMP by Beverly, for example has Milk Protein (think Caseine) Isolate, Calcium Caseinate, and then Whey listed. It has both, but 80:20 caseine to whey.

Casein Protein is also a good one to take before bed.

It has creatine in it. How does your stomach handle that?
I've actually sampled this protein before and didn't mind the taste nor did I have any digestion issues. Are there any other possible side-effects to the creatine?
Mexi/Woods,

Any thoughts on this? I saw it at Sam's Club the other day for a really good price:

100% Premium Whey Protein Plus - Sam's Club 5 lbs. Whey Protein Powder

Not a huge fan of Muscletech products but this doesn't look too bad. The creatine issue isn't a big deal unless you don't handle it well or are already taking creatine. It will cause you to gain some water weight.

I get the Beverly UMP 2 1/2 pound container for $32.

Water retention, which is good if you are trying to get strong...more water inside of your muscle. If you are swimming it may help. Only take it after work outs. That is a recovery protein designed to get leacine, creatine, and amino acids to your muscles pronto. You would take that right after a work out. If you take it more than that for an extended amount of time, I don't know. Studies are everywhere on creatine. Most find 5 to 10 grams a day as ok. Any more of that and it potentially messes with the kidneys. I don't know the exact reason why. When you take it, generally you load for four days and then do 5 grams after working out, or mid day on off days. If you are swimming, I really don't know. Try it out and see if you notice weight gain or cramping from dehydration. You will notice the weight gain within a week if it happens due to your swimming and activity level. Sink a lot of water either way.

I'm currently sitting at work with ice on both shins. Only week 3 of running and already with the shin splints, this sucks.

Week 1 day 3 of sit-ups completed and strength training tonight. Just a week in and I'm fighting some major soreness but starting to like it.

Bummer! So painful. I have not tried them, but my daughter wears these compression type/binding long socks when she runs. She bought them at a running shoe store. She says the tightness lessens the pain when she runs.

Just finished Day 8 of the 30 Day Shred! In 2 days I move up to Level 2.

Did not get a chance to run yesterday, but will get out tomorrow.
