Went to the gym today for the first time. My wife has asked me not to start the c25k program until it warms up outside so we can do it together. I worked a solid hour on the bike and the treadmill.

Love the commitment to the workout and, more importantly, the wife!

A very quick read that might be good for the person just starting out.

TESTOSTERONE NATION | Running Makes You Fat - Page 1

I think a common problem for a lot of, even experienced runners, is they know nothing except your prototypical jog. It is like any other type of exercising regiment in that you have to incorporate sprints, hills, tempo, etc. in to your running to reap full benefits. It is kind of like the guy who has been lifting weights all of his life and just does bench press and bicep curls.

Wait...what?

Yep, my wife is ripped. I mean shredded and not in a "marathoner" type way. She does 2 days of weight training circuits/2 days of medium runs/1 day of spinning and 1-2 days of Yoga. She can pick up tomorrow and run a half with little problem.

I am 3 weeks into this and will do this for eight weeks total. For anyone looking to lose weight, get in better shape, and strength train, while not spending over 45 minutes at the gym 3 days a week, check this out.

Also, none of this works without working out the way you eat.

The idea here is at 20/80 principal. 20% of your exercises give you 80% of your results (just like 20% of your sales people bring in 80% of your revenue.) You take two opposing muscle groups and pick one exercise for each (i.e. bench and barbell row for your back)

You then find your 10 rep max (meaning that you can't do 11 reps). After that you alternate b/n the two exercises for 15 minutes getting as many reps as you can get. The idea is to not do more that 5 reps in any rotation so that you don't work close to your maximum capacity. The next week, you try to get more reps. Once you get 10% over your original rep count, add weight. If you get frisky, you can add more couplings.

What's a good protein powder guys? I've been looking a little at GNC, but what's the difference? I'm gonna start hitting up the weights next week. I need protein.

Sounds like me other than not being ripped or a female.

Your first and best option is food. If you are set on a supplement then Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey is a great one. Be care buying anything at GNC though, it's easy to over pay, even with their gold card scam. bodybuilding.com, dpsnutrition.com, supplementwarehouse.com, massnutrition.com are all good sites. For a 5lb container don't pay more then $52 (+tax, shipping, whatever). Another good one but more expensive is beverly international. I've never personally tried them but have never heard a bad thing. The main thing to watch is whatever you buy make sure it's protein only and not a bunch of other crap added to it.

This will get deeper than you probably are looking for? When are you planning on taking it?

If you are taking it as a stop gap b/n breakfast and lunch (or meal #2 and #5 for people who eat 6 meals per day) you want a Casseine based protein powder. It breaks down much slower and is digested into your blood stream longer (leaving you feeling "fuller" longer.) If you are taking it before your workout, you want Whey. That will breakdown quicker. You want a scoop of that w/ an orange or apple about 15-45 min. before you star working out and another right after you finish with a glass of chocolate milk. That will aid recovery and get the aminos to your muscles quicker as the blood rushes to them to repair the damage that they sustained due to lifting.

Other than that, you want your protein from lean meats, fish, and chicken (meat or eggs). If you eat almonds, or healthy fats you'll get about 6g/serving there and even oatmeal has 6 gs per serving, but those will be "incomplete" proteins. Eat fat free or low fat cottage cheese before bed w/ some green vegetables if you can. That will help as well.

And Beverly International tastes fantastic.

If you live in NKY, IM me and I'll give you an address to go to a distributor which will save shipping costs.

My trainer only sells UMP. Everyone seems to love it. I bum off Mom quite a bit, and I can say it tastes great.

UMP is the Casseine based protein and is more of a low-carb meal replacement. Muscle Provider is their whey protein.

I think I should have phrased that as "only sells Beverly International". I think she has both the casseine and whey. What my Mom has is the UMP.

Isn't that company located in NKY?
