Rookie Fitness (Just Do It!)

Featured Replies

Thought I would start something for us not-so-fit BGPers who want to start something.

Post whatever you did today, and I promise you that you will get at least one "like".

Today I did:

25 squats

1 min Plank

50 crunches

40 roman twists

5 Burpees (that kicked my butt!)

How about you?

I'm getting ready to go get a McRib. Surely the walk to the car will burn a calorie or two.

Seriously, I'm going to start this fitness thing in a couple of weeks (). We have too many restaurant gift cards to start anything like that right now.

I prefer the nice glazed pretzel twist. 40 seems excessive though.

But have you tried the cinnamon sugar kind? Tasty.

As a Christmas gift, I received a man cave from my wife that included an Elliptical & weight bench. And then also a brand new recliner to go along with a 46-inch television that we bought at Thanksgiving. It's the most contradictory room known to man.

What is a burpee?

FKW posted a link in the other fitness thread.

Stand, then squat, then a push-up, back to squat then jump and reach. All in consecutive motion. It's a challenge. The added benefit I see on this one is basic balance and coordination, a definite plus cuz I'm not getting any younger.

If you ever feel like doing something insane, try the burpee mile. You do a burpee but instead of jumping up you jump out, like a broad jump. Where you land is where you do your next burpee. You continue until you've gone a mile. I haven't mustered the stupidity to try this one yet.

What is a burpee?

I just checked with my 23-yr-old exercising daughter. You start standing up. You then go down to a push up position, do a push up, then stand up and jump up as high as you can. Her description was "very tiring."

Pretty much what I said when it was first explained to me.

It does not take long for burpees to turn from physically challenging to mentally challenging. Especially when you are doing them for time. You can also add variations to them like burpee box jumps. Do a burpee then instead of jumping straight up you jump on a plyo box. Or burpee pull ups, do a burpee into a jumping pull up. Over the bar burpees if you are doing them in a work out that includes a barbell movement. You just do a burpee and then jump over the bar either forward or sideways and immediately go into another burpee.

We used to call these "up-downs".

You have to do those in the Insanity workouts. I did that program for 30 days back in the Spring & the "Burpees" were a part of that. They called them something else.

It brings back bad memories, to be honest.
