Holmes 33 Beechwood 21

Featured Replies

That was one ugly football game. Penalties, turnovers, injuries, missed blocks, missed tackles I hope I never see another football game as ugly as that one. Holmes can't even line up on offense and run a play. I am not kidding. They must have had a half dozen delay of game penalties because they couldn't call a play and run it. You will not see a more undisciplined football team. I will give the Holmes coaches credit for a couple very good play calls on offense that came up big for them. But beyond that, ugly. Let there be no doubt though, they have players. Scruggs can fly. Peterson can get open when he wants. They have a number of other athletes that can make plays. Beechwood opened the door with turnovers and poor play early. Then as the injuries mounted, it became the Holmes varsity versus the Beechwood JV and they could not stop the Holmes athletes. Beechwood's coaches are going to have to dig deep to put this together. Next week it will be two teams in desperation mode - Beechwood versus Holy Cross.

VOR, I feel your pain. I witnessed the same thing tonight in Alexandria.

Depends on what team you're talking about. Some teams may still be okay.

Not many in this state. Maybe 2. 6 starters on any defense is a lot.

On that same bad note, I wonder how many starters for Beechwood are tuition students?

Don't understand the purpose of your question. What does that have to do with anything?

Here is your game report:

Beechwood received the opening kickoff and immediately fumbled the ball away on their first play. Holmes went 3 and out. Beechwood then started on their own 9 and drove it the length of the field behind run after run by Erdman. The scoring play was an 8 yard pass from Lane to Tally. Sletto's XP made it 7-0 at the 6:06 mark. The Tigers tried to kick it away from Scruggs, but he grabbed the pooch kick anyway and showed his skill with a 70 yard scrambling return before being tackled at the 10. Holmes had penalty after penalty and the drive ended all the way back at the 25. Beechwood took over on the 25. Lane made a poor decision under pressure trying to toss the ball on what may have been a screen pass. It was picked off by a Holmes player and he trotted into the end zone from 20 yards out with the easy score. At the 2:28 mark it was 7-7 following the extra point by Gullett. On Beechwood's next series they were moving the ball but the drive ended when Lane threw another interception at the Holmes 25.

The second quarter had Holmes moving the ball up to the Beechwood 47 before punting. Beechwood took over at the 10, picked up one first down on a run by Erdman, who was getting nearly all the carries for Beechwood but he was injured on a run around right end. This was the first of a number of key injuries on the night. Beechwood was forced to punt. Holmes went on a long grinding drive of their own picking up key 3rd down after key 3rd down. The Tigers looked to have them stopped several times only to see plays like Scruggs making a 3 yard loss become a 8 yard gain. Holmes had no timeouts left because they had to keep using them throughout the half to get organized. It looked like they might run out of time but Coston scrambled for a TD from 4 yards out with 0:29 to go. Gullett's kick was good making it 14-7 Bulldogs. Beechwood took a knee on their possession and that was the end of the half. On the last Holmes drive, linebackers Justice and Kinman and defensive end Stokes joined Erdman on the sideline with injuries and did not return.

Holmes received the second half kickoff and it looked like they were going to get a big play but Peterson dropped a long pass at the 10. Scruggs made another excellent run to get a first down and Holmes went right back to Peterson. This time he made the play in the end zone on the 40 yard pass. The extra point was no good and Holmes led 20-7 with 8:28 to go. Thomas almost broke the kickoff return bringing it across the 50 to the 44. A couple plays into the drive, Thomas lost the ball. Holmes then went back to Peterson again for the long down field pass and he was knocked out at the 1. It looked like the Tigers were going to get a break when Coston lost the snap and the Tigers recovered at the 1. The Tigers could not get a first down and punted to the 40. End of the 3rd quarter with the score 20-7 in favor of Holmes.

The 4th quarter had the Bulldogs moving into scoring postion before Coston was knocked out of the game after running it down to the 13. Two false start penalties pushed the ball back to the 23. The back up QB Cheak threw a nice ball on a slant to Peterson that he could not bring in. On 4th down, Holmes used Peterson on the slant again and the Tigers left the flat wide open behind him. Cheak hit a wide open Wilson for the 23 yard TD pass. The XP was blocked and it was 26-7 with 11:45 to go. The Tigers offense struggled and had to punt. Holmes then went on a long drive. The weakened Tiger defense could not make the tackles nor the plays on 3rd down. Holmes' Cheak faked up the middle, the young Tigers bit and he went around left end untouched from 17 yards. With 5:30 to go it was 33-7. Beechwood got a very nice 41 yard TD run by Lane versus a Holmes defense with many backups on the field. 33-14 at 3:38 to go. The Tigers recovered the onsides kick but went 3 and out. The Tigers then recovered a fumble at the 15. Holmes put most of their first team D back in but Lane made a nice throw to Thomas on 4th down while scrambling for the 15 yard TD. The Tigers had faint hope at 33-21 with 1:32 to go. This time the onsides kick did not work and the Bulldogs ran out the clock. Final score 33-21.

Sorry I missed this, headed to see the grandkids in Atlanta. Sounds like Holmes from last week. They are undisciplined but have some very good skill players. Sorry to hear about the injuries. The penalties for the Bulldogs will catch up with them if they don't get it corrected. Still kind of shocked by the outcome. Last week they couldn't line up defensively. They had 4 straight penalties in one Scott drive. Hopefully, the Beechwood kids get healthy. It is much better when teams have all their players.

The only thing you would have enjoyed about that game was the final score. Believe me, it was a much better night for you just hearing that score where you are and not watching how it happened. I will take a guess and say Holmes had 6 delay of game penalties, used nearly all their timeouts in the game to avoid delay of game, had perhaps 8 false start/procedure penalties, several fumbled snaps from center - I could go on but you get the picture. Do yourself a favor, don't watch the tape. Just enjoy that score.

With Holmes doing all of that to shoot themselves in the foot, how in the world does Beechwood injuries or not get down so much to the Bulldogs. I understand how devastating injuries are to teams especially small schools. Every time a player goes down you lose 2 starters, but still I am shocked at this score after reading your summary of the Holmes issues.

Is the Justice kid playing? With Erdman down did that make the Thomas kid the number 1 rb?

Nice report as always by Eye. I will add to the injured players Eye named as out in the first half - Erdman, Justice, Kinman and Stokes. Also out of the game early in the second half were 2 way lineman Biddle and end McKenzie. The Beechwood trainer earned his pay tonight.

Enjoy the moment Holmes! I here a big blue and white train coming!

If Holmes could get a coach to instill discipline and get those kids focused, they could be so good. They have 8-10 kids that any team in N. Ky. would love to have on their roster. In Scruggs and Peterson, they have 2 of the most talented players up here. Last year Beechwood beat every team they faced by 28 points or more except - Mayfield, Cov Cath, New Cath and Holmes. That group of schools is right where Holmes would fit every year if they could get the most out of their talent.

The Mayans were right.

That is too funny!

Congratulations to the Bulldogs.

Is Erdman done for the season? Is so, no way BW can compete. They were already decimated by the Nussbaum loss and without both, they should just look forward to next season. Those two were the cogs that rolled the wheel in the Fort. I hope they both have 100% recoveries.

I get what you are saying and it would be GREAT, but the odds of this happening are the same as me hitting the lottery.
