#74 for Holmes B.Johnson has to be one of the best d lineman I have seen in a while at his age. He is only a sophmore and and comes off the ball real good and it seemed Beechwood was having some issues blocking him as did Scott last week. This kid could have a bright future. He looks a bout 6'3 280 if not taller.

Was the hit on Gerdman legal? Clean?

 

There is some speculation that the injury is very serious.

 

Far sideline. Hard to see. It looked to me like he made a hard plant to try and cut back inside from the sideline and it gave out on the cut. The Beechwood coaches did seem upset about something and talked with the officials as Erdman was being looked at.

 

Just to be clear there were 2 different plays as indicated in previous post by LeeCorso.

 

The questionable hit happened with the Tigers on defense with Erdman pursuing the play. I didn't think it was a crack back but the tall receiver (#11) delivered the hit high with the shoulder to the helmet or high shoulder area. Don't know if that is legal in high school or not.

 

The injury occurred on the Tigers next offensive series. Erdman had just picked up a first down after a 20 yard gain on the sideline in front of the Beechwood bench (far sideline). Didn't look like he got hit but as he was going out of bounds he just went to the ground. I don't know the extent of the injury.

 

 

Holmes has some serious talent. Very undisciplined and looked to be out of shape. Congrats and good luck. (especially next week)

Interesting. He is a load for sure. But I was talking with some people about the game and our comment was how well Beechwood handled him. I can only remember him making one or two tackles all night. I definitely would not call him one of the best defensive linemen I have seen. He is too slow. It is all about his size that makes him effective and at this point he is just a notch better than the typical 300 pound immoveable object you often see in high school. But I believe he is just a sophomore. If he works, he does have the potential to be very good.

With Holmes doing all of that to shoot themselves in the foot, how in the world does Beechwood injuries or not get down so much to the Bulldogs. I understand how devastating injuries are to teams especially small schools. Every time a player goes down you lose 2 starters, but still I am shocked at this score after reading your summary of the Holmes issues.

 

Is the Justice kid playing? With Erdman down did that make the Thomas kid the number 1 rb?

 

I hear what you are saying, but take any team, remove their 6 best defensive players and see how they look. That is what Beechwood dealt with in the second half. Starting defensive end Trey Hicks is out for the season with an ACL. Nussbaum was out before the game and he is their top defender. Entering the game the best defensive players, all district level players, were Erdman and Justice. Erdman knocked out at the start of the second quarter. Justice was playing great but then he left about half way though the 2nd quarter. That left Kinman as probably their best defender still on the field. He left the game just before halftime. At some point in the half Stokes was injured and never returned. Hmmm ... I wonder why Holmes was able to sustain a drive at the end of the half and get a score. Their first TD was on an INT return so the defense was solid till the injuries hit.

 

Then early in the second half two way starting lineman Biddle was injured. Soon after, defensive end Mitch McKenzie was injured. So now you have 8 starting level defensive players, including the 5 best defenders on the team all on the sideline. Tough for any team, especially a 1A team that was already inexperienced. Beechwood literally had their JV defense on the field plus about 4 regular 1st team level players for most of the second half. How many teams can win a game with that? No excuses, just facts.

If Holmes could get a coach to instill discipline and get those kids focused, they could be so good. They have 8-10 kids that any team in N. Ky. would love to have on their roster. In Scruggs and Peterson, they have 2 of the most talented players up here. Last year Beechwood beat every team they faced by 28 points or more except - Mayfield, Cov Cath, New Cath and Holmes. That group of schools is right where Holmes would fit every year if they could get the most out of their talent.

Would Beechwood have won this game without the injuries during the game? I think it would have been a toss up with probably a slight edge to Holmes. BW did have a good early drive with a steady dose of running the ball but I think they would have struggled throwing the ball as evidence by the pick six during the drive right after the touchdown and then another interception soon after. BW did run the ball effectively when Erdman was playing but Holmes had 9 and sometimes 10 players in the box and would have probably been able to eventually control the BW running game and force BW to pass the ball.

 

Even at full strength (minus Nussbaum) BW would have had trouble covering #11. Erdman when he was playing did provide over the top coverage on #11; which would have made a big difference during the game. Holmes has some nice players who are athletic, fast and physical and they deserve a lot of credit for the win.

 

What does BW do from here? Obviously they need to regroup and figure out how to use what players they have available. On offense I would consider going with a more open spread type offense and make quick throws or have the QB run the ball. Lane is effective when he is in the open field and hopefully he can learn to be more decisive when throwing the ball. I would also consider moving up some of the younger players. If LaSalle can play with a Freshmen QB why can't BW put a couple of their stronger kids in position to get experience and to help out the defense etc...? I am not talking about putting younger players on the line but corner or safety help could potentially work or WR on offense. Hopefully BW can get most of their injured players back for a strong run towards the end of the season. BW would also be wise to make sure Nussbaum is as close to 100% as possible. Don't rush him back too early and risk potentially losing him for the season. That would be back breaking for the team and for the player as well.

 

Cov Cath in two weeks is going to be brutal..

Many people claim the only reason Beechwood wins as much as they do is because they have several out of district players on their team so instead of everyone just guessing how about we quantify it this year to see if there is a relationship between a weak Beechwood team and lack of tuition students.

If you want to do that exercise, then look back over the previous ten years or so. This season is 2 games old with a slew of injuries so anything happening this season is not valid.

A decade? That would be some project, this year would be a great starting point.

 

And I agree on injuries to an extent but either way starting with this year (and if was tracked every year) it would give us a great indication if we are talking myth or reality.

I thought Coach Lickert did a fantastic job at Holmes, in the brief time that he was there. They played clean all the way around. I didnt get a chance to see their first game, but heard there were a lot of penalties against the Dogs against Scott. They didn't have enough personnel on the field and had to burn timeouts and so forth. Serious lack of organization last night.
