SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Cody Cochran and Mohamed Thiaw delivered goals in the final 15 minutes of the first half to lift the No. 12 University of Louisville men's soccer team to a 2-1 road victory against No. 7 Syracuse on Friday night at SU Soccer Stadium.

Facing a 1-0 deficit, the Cardinals evened the score in the 31st minute on Cochran's second goal of the season before Thiaw propelled the road side into the lead in the 45th minute with his second goal of the season. Louisville moved to 4-1-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in the ACC with the result while also saddling the Orange (4-1-2, 0-1-1 ACC) with their first loss of 2017. The Cardinals extended their unbeaten streak against Syracuse to nine matches, including seven wins in that span.

"It was a great effort by our guys tonight," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "This is a challenging place to win and to get three points took a massive effort. It is something to build on."

Friday's goal for Thiaw was his 14th in two collegiate seasons with the Cardinals, including his eighth game-winner. It marked the second straight season the senior forward has connected for the clinching goal against Syracuse after scoring the only goal of the match in last season's 1-0 triumph. The goal for Cochran was his third career tally for the sophomore.

The home side opened the scoring in the 11th minute on Friday when John-Austin Ricks converted on a corner kick chance with a header inside the lower left corner. Hugo Delhommelle served the ball in from the right side before Ricks finished for his third goal of the season.

Louisville, which played Friday's match without senior Tim Kubel who was serving a suspension after being issued a red card against Wake Forest on Sept. 9, matched Syracuse's goal in the 31st minute with a goal of its own off a corner kick. Junior Adam Wilson served the ball into the box, where it bounced at the feet of Cochran, who struck quickly with a shot inside the right post. Wilson registered his third assist of the season, including one in each of the last three matches.

A little more than 14 minutes after Cochran had pulled the road side level, Thiaw gave the Cardinals their first lead with only 27 seconds remaining in the first half. After gaining an advantage in a 1-v-1 charge up the field, Thiaw calmly worked the ball past Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrick Hilpert and inside the right post for the decisive goal.

Louisville closed the match with a 12-5 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. The Cardinals also finished with a 5-2 margin in corner kicks.
