Estill County

Can the Engineers get back to their winning ways in 2013? In 2012 Estill County had a disappointing season going 0-10 and missing the playoffs for the second straight year. Engineers were plagued by injuries in 2012 including losing two of their best players in Trevor Jones and Taylor Tate for the entire season due to ACL injuries.

Estill County returns majority of their team from 2012 not only for 2013 but also for 2014. Engineers will have a solid rushing attack with Jon Collins and Greg Stamper. Estill County has the weapons to get back to the playoffs and have a winning season but the big question going around is can they? Estill County is hoping that 2013 & 2014 will turn out like 2007 & 2008 did. Estill County should have a solid OL with senior Steven Sexton leading the way, along with Sexton, will be David Hunt, Chipper Hitchcock, River Kelley, Brandon McKinney, Wes Sutton.

On the defensive side of things, Estill County allowed 3,098 rushing yards and 1,261 passing yards. Estill County must fix that if they wanna make it back to the playoffs for the first time in two years.

Estill County’s schedule should provide several opportunities to get back to the playoffs. Estill County will open the season with 3 straight home games; August 23 with Morgan County who slaughtered Estill County last year 44-8. Then on August 30, Lexington Christian, September 6, neighboring Jackson County comes to Irvine, after that Estill County will go on the road for 3 straight away games; September 13 Estill County will travel to Salyersville to take on Magoffin County, last time these two met was 2010 when Estill County slaughtered the Hornets 49-12. Estill County will then begin district play, traveling to Bath County on September 20 and then to Powell County on September 27, both teams defeated Estill County last year. Bath won 49-28, Powell won 48-44. Estill County will return home on October 4 to take on the Bourbon County Colonels who annihilated 64-14 last year in Paris. Estill County will go back on the road traveling to Frankfort to take on Western Hills who edged Estill County 47-35 last year in Irvine. Estill will return home for the last home regular season game of 2013 hosting the Garrard County Golden Lions who annihilated Estill 59-6 last year over in Lancaster. Estill County will end the regular season on the road as they travel to Stearns to take on McCreary Central. The game that everyone has circled on their calendar’s is September 27thgame when the Engineers travel down the road to Stanton to take on the Powell County Pirates. Every time these two teams get together in all sports, always packs a huge crowd.

This time of the year, everyone around the Estill County football program gets really excited about football season as they look forward to watching the Engineers take the field and see how they do but they are cautious because of how 2012 turned out. In the end, Estill County should fare pretty well in a lot of people’s eye!

Players to Watch:

  • #2 Trevor Jones (JR. QB/DB). Trevor is a very nice player, has good arm, good legs, good eye sight. He’ll put up good numbers this coming season.
  • #23 Greg Stamper (SR. RB/LB). Stamper is rushing threat #1. Greg has the strength to break tackles and speed to out run the defenders. When Estill needs a few inches or a few yards to get a first down, Greg is the guy they call on because he can get that first down.
  • #16 Jon Collins (JR. RB/LB). Collins is rushing threat #2. Jon is similar to Greg Stamper, he has the strength to break tackles and speed to out run the defenders.
  • #63 Steven Sexton (SR OL/DL) Steven is a bruiser, you come in his direction, you won’t get past him. He will be the main guy in 2013 leading the Engineers offensive and defensive line.
  • #8 Kris Dennis (JR QB-TE/DE). Kris was the QB all of last year due to Trevor tearing his ACL. With the Engineers passing, Kris will be a threat at TE. Kris has good legs and is good in traffic.

- Morgan County (Toss Up. Morgan Throttled Estill last year 44-8. This one could go either way. I think Estill wins this one.)

- Lexington Chrisitian - L (First meeting between these two varsity teams that I know of. Estill and LCA did play JV couple years ago which Estill won 54-38)

- Jackson County - W (Engineers shouldn't have a problem here)

- @ Magoffin County - W

- @ Bath County - W (Estill has had Bath's number in football even tho Bath did beat Estill last year in Irvine 49-28. I think that Bath has only beaten Estill twice dating back to 97 per KHSAA)

- @ Powell County - (Another toss up. Estill usually has Powell's number on the grid iron but Powell has beaten Estill twice in back to back years. If Estill comes to play they'll beat Powell. This is the biggest game of the year when it comes to these two teams)

- Bourbon County - L

- @ Western Hills (Toss up. Western Hills has defeated Estill in back to back seasons. This one may be no different)

- Garrard County - L (Garrard throttled Estill 59-6 last year over in Garrard.)

- @ McCreary Central - W

I did hear that Estill had a good showing Saturday in the Montgomery County 7 on 7. Heard Estill beat Montgomery in Pool Play, lost to GRC in Pool Play then lost to Montgomery in the tournament. I didn't go but a Montgomery County fan was saying that he was impressed with Estill and that they might surprise some people this year
