X's last guy before Bernard was probably Lee Reherman. Most of you probably know him better as Hawk from American Gladiators. Not all meathead though, the guy graduated from Cornell and has an MBA and a PhD in economics.

If the new coach begins a new winning tradition they can. The school is putting a lot of effort into building the program and is taking the time to find the right coach.

Coach, I definitely think they had more talent in the "skilled" positions, but I think X had superior talent in the trenches with Zepp, Tronzo, Jefferies, Smith, Elder, Sturgeon and superior kickers/punters. X has also had more than their fair share of running backs the last five years with KJ Austin Bruce, then Vic then Duece (and Neal and Beach coming through). I would say though that at this point, Male's grads have done better in college (Barclay setting the ACC rushing record, Bush being all-world at UL).

Pitino's son is a senior there this year. Any word on possible names?

Not sure what that has to do with anything... X has clearly been better the last 5 years. The talent level on Preston at the turn of the century was AMAZING. Bush, Jones, Green, Spencer, Barclay, Shumate (although he went on to bigger things in college...) ALL were on the same team. Just outstanding individual talents.

Bell, I know of one study that was conducted that surveyed 403 individuals in Jefferson County either with children in high school or in high school themselves regarding Prop 20 nearly two years ago when this first got some teeth. The majority were against Prop 20 (179 were in support of Prop 20 out of the 403) and the really interesting thing is that of the persons 16-18 that were surveyed, fewer than 1% were for it. 66% of all surveyed thought that private schools put more emphasis on athletics and 74% said they thought privates put more emphasis on academics. Of the 403 surveyed only 26 people had graduated from a private high school. A few caveats. This was done in 2006 and in Jefferson Co. only and was not a scientific study.

The "people that matter" are the kids playing the sports. Not the coaches, not the ADs, not the parents who are for anything that will help little Johnny win a championship ring. If you asked the kids, I think you'd be surprised by the results. And for what it's worth, the majority on this site, which seems to be a pretty decent representation of the state, are against the split.

1938 Manual team finished 10-0. Scored 456 points and gave up only 58. Only 13 of those points came to KY teams. Only one team was within three touchdowns of them. The '59 Manual team had two tough games that year against Trinity and Flaget. Only close game the '38 team had was against a team from CT.

Highlands is favored against every team in the state but two according to this site.... I have to say I agree.

The St. X swim team's 20th consecutive state title unfortunately is not a national record. That record is 29 consecutive by a team from HI. St. X does have the 3rd longest consecutive streak and the positive news is that the two teams ahead of them have had their streak snapped, so it's in St. X's hands. St. X has set the national record for total number of state titles in swimming though with 44. St. X has that record by at least two titles on the next closest team. The 44 total titles is also good enough for the second most titles in ANY sport in the country, to Little Rock HS 51+ titles in track. Congrats to the O'Tooles for another title.

I like the '03 one better. Looks like there's 19 emeralds (one to grow on I suppose). I would also suggest getting the pendant -- the moms really seem to like them.

Really? If so, then why do each of the schools you listed have over 10,000 students (or close to 20,000 in Harvard's case) (by the way, all of those schools are 3-6 times the size of my alma mater, yet my alma mater, while a nationally ranked school, is not regarded as highly as those)? Why wouldn't they shrink the size of the school to make it even harder to get into, thus taking the cream of the cream of the crop? There are plenty of examples of very strong large schools and some very bad small schools. And if smaller is in fact better, since, according to you, it's universally known, then why is KY's primary educational system ranked so poorly nationally when it seems as though surrounding states have larger public schools?

Well, one reason St. X hasn't succeeded in basketball is because we don't have much recent tradition in the sport and we don't put much emphasis on the sport (for better or worse). Berg is a great guy and a good coach, but I think we could find better coaches (not a better person though), although I hope that he's allowed to stay as long as he wants, even if that does mean not being a Sweet 16 team 95% of the time. Now, we do have plans for a new arena in the works, and things might change with that, as it will hopefully be a top of the line facility, which does draw kids.

How is Male or Manual or Eastern still "responsible for giving them a free, appropriate, public education" if the student is at Liberty High School after being thrown out of the former school? JCPS is responsible, but Male doesn't have to worry about the disruptions, Eastern doesn't have to worry about the drug problem or Manual doesn't have to worry about that student's academic shortcomings once they're no longer enrolled, the same as St. X or Trinity. In summary, a student being thrown out of a JCPS school and going to Liberty is the same as a St. X or Trinity student being thrown out and attending a JCPS school. As for the other stuff you opined on, it doesn't matter what I say as your beliefs are already cemented in your head and you don't really care what I, or anyone else says.

While it may not be the official feeder, Meyzeek sends a large majority of their AP students onto Manual.

Well, shouldn't we be able to find "individual talent" with such a larger population? Afterall, your argument is that it's a numbers game. I think finding one amazing basketball player out of 1,400 would be easier than finding one out of 800. Do numbers help? Certainly, but they aren't the end-all be all either as evidenced by the number of titles won by the private schools before they were the size they currently are and when public schools were much larger on average than they currently are. Why is Woodford so successful in wrestling year in, year out? Tradition, coaching and a fantastic feeder system. Kids growing up in that community see a winning program that they want to be a part of, so they start training at a young age with the knowledge of those who came before them and the desire to uphold that tradition. With great coaching starting at a young age, the kids are ready to become champions. Same could be said for PRP with baseball or Ballard with basketball or Paducah Tilghman with track or Daviess County with XC.

You're missing the point. JCPS as a whole may not throw them out, but those students who are placed in the alternative programs are out of the Males, Manuals, Ballards, Easterns, Senecas, Westerns, Athertons, etc. So those schools "wash their hands" of those students.

JCPS can and do throw kids out of their school and send them to an alternative high school. While not all public schools may have an option like this, some publics do have that option, so saying that "public schools can not throw kids out" is not true. Additionally, yes, private schools do recruit students with 2.3 GPAs in middle school (although the PSAT doesn't apply since they take that test in high school). There were plenty of kids who were far from being mental giants but I would like to think that the school prepared them as best as possible for their future. Part of St. X's educational philosophy is to "admit students of varying abilities who seek the benefit of Catholic education." I would imagine that most private schools have similar statements in their missions.
