And where, exactly, was Owens and the rest of the BC Lions watching this one from??? Russell did what they had to do to make it to Rupp. Certainly not the kind of showing we would have liked to see, but the kids worked through alot of adversity this season to make it a special one. After the preview cover this season, many on this board were bashing the Devils' for being overrated. No matter what the case, they were playing basketball today, or at least a close facsimile, and over 200 other schools were getting ready for baseball season.

Calling a spade a spade here...the officials helped Elliot back in the game last night. Don't get me wrong, not trying to take anything away from the young Lions' performance and Russell definitely helped too, but the refs certainly played a big part in it. The second half, Elliot pressed and got VERY physical with Russell's ball handlers, yet the Lions were in the double bonus before the Devils got close to shooting any bonus free throws. As a matter of fact, Elliot was in the double bonus in both halves before Russell got in the bonus. When you press full court and reach,slap and shove to go for the ball, you will inevitably foul...that's a given. The officials to let it go and allowed the Lions' defenders to practically assault the ball handler which definitely helped inflate the second half turnover number for Russell. Another factor is both of Russell's top guards fouled out, yet the Lions didn't have a player foul out until the last seconds of the game. As has been mentioned already, Elliot lived at the line in the second half. IMO, if you saw it any other way, you're flat out wrong...period.

Russell also had two starters fighting the flu, not to mention Gill playing on a bad ankle after his first quarter injury. Being sick does not entirely account for a 30 point differential...:thumb:

I know Russell's stats and the MSU stats both had Daniel with 13. I will have to check the book, but I'm pretty sure that's accurate. In any event, he didn't score after his 2 FT's in the second quarter.

Matt Daniel actually had 11 in the first and 2 in the second. He finished with 13 points on the night...

I wasn't at the game, but I did listen to the end on the radio. If there had been a foul worth calling, I'm sure Dickie would have said so and he never even mentioned it.

Refs rarely cost one team a game. There are usually many factors and last night was no exception. The early lack of scoring and turnovers put Lewis County in a hole. That being said, the Lions were up 46-44 when the first block was called on McDaniels. At this point of the fourth quarter, Lewis definitely had the momentum and Greenup was reeling. The kid held his ground on the block practically from the time the Greenup player crossed half court. It wasn't even close. If the ref makes the correct call right there, it's Lewis' ball with the lead. The second block was McDaniels' fifth foul. The kid had made several big baskets for the Lions down the stretch. To lose a starter and a player who has come up big so far hurts any team. On the technical, I didn't see the preceeding play, but a Greenup guy told me the Lewis guard was mugged on the sideline, right in front of Hampton and the official called it out on Lewis. These instances don't even take into account the non-call on Greenup's last shot when it certainly appeared the Musketeer player charged into the defender. Devil58, to say that these questionable calls had no effect on the outcome of the contest is naive at best. I understand your desire to protect your fellow zebras, but last night definitely showed the guys in stripes can, and sometimes do, effect the results of games.

The 4th and 5th fouls against #40 were very questionable blocking fouls. The 4th was definitely a charge, the 5th was closer to being a toss up, but I thought it was a charge. A couple of other calls, or no-calls, that cshould have gone Lewis' way didn't help. All of these happened in the 4th quarter. Total fouls were 15 to 7 for the game in Greenup's favor. IMO,the refs played a huge part in the outcome of the game.

I'd say not having Clark for the first Boyd County game made a little bit of a difference and would keep them from being considered at full strength. Wouldn't you agree???

Another thing the kids don't think of is if they work the scapular stabilizers more, they will gain more strength in the rotator cuff due to improved efficiency. More strength in the rotator cuff should get you a couple of mph's on your fastball...

One thing I see as a big problem with shoulder injuries, and not just in pitchers, is that many strength programs do little or no back work. Ignoring the back muscles, especially the rhomboids and trapezius, is just setting a kid up to have shoulder problems. The two muscles mentioned stabilize the scapula (shoulder blade) during movement. All four rotator cuff muscles attach to the scapula. If the scapula is not held steady during the throwing motion, there will be significant mechanical breakdowns. If the scapula is not held in place and is allowed to slide forward due to muscular imbalances, parts of it will begin to pinch muscles and tendons that run through the joint space. This is one area that you need to be sure you work to avoid setting yourself up for problems down the road.

After watching the Russell Ashland game last Friday, I only saw two players on the floor who were typical "Ashland players" and those were Thomas and McDavid. The other kids would have been sitting the bench in the 80's and 90's and probably. wouldn't have made the team back in the glory years. Today's kids would rather quit and blame someone else for their failures than admit they aren't very good. I have seen this at many, many high schools and it is representative of today's society much more than anything against Flynn or any other high school coach. Sounds like some of the Ashland folks can't handle the fact they are no longer the best thing going in the region.

I think this question falls under the category of "DUH!"

Not to take anything away from the way the Bulldogs have played Belfry recently, but let's look at how they have been competing with Russell. Keep in mind that this is only at the JV and freshmen level because Russell's district schedule doesn't leave anymore openings in their non-district schedule after the Big 3. The past few years, these teams have played even with each team coming out on top a few times and most every game being close. Russell has been AA regional champs 3 out of the past 4 seasons and we all know they won state this season. Keep in mind that Lawrence usually seems to have a few of those kids that are a little older than a typical freshman so they generally have a decided size advantage over the Red Devils. Another thing is that Russell's freshmen and JV teams typically have no players who are also playing up, by which I mean if you are good enough to play at a higher level than your classmates, you don't play with them. The Red Devils coaches see freshman and JV games as a chance to get players some experience and to improve. No need to have Friday night guys playing on Mondays, etc. Not saying LC does this, but I just wanted to make it clear the Bulldogs have not always seen the absolute best athletes in these classes when playing Russell, and still they have been unable to dominate them. I hope I have made that clear...seems about as clear as mud to me right now. Anyway, personally, I feel this shows that while Lawrence would certainly be more competitive in 2A (as was already stated, what 3A school wouldn't be) they would not necessarily be dominate. To say they would have multiple titles might be stretching it a bit... :thumb:

Not surprising. Hicks has been acting like that ever since he got to GC and those of us in the 16th have grown very tired of his carrying on. He truly gives a poor impression of the school and community and his attitude carries over to his players. Kids learn from leadership and from him they learn boorish behavior. Thankfully, we've never had to endure his antics during regional tournament time in Morehead...
