With all the rain Monday and the real heavy rain today, what kind of shape will the field be in for Friday?

I know he got win number 200 against West Carter during the 2001 regular season and finished that year with 4 more. With 11 wins in '02, 10 in '03, 13 in '04 and 11 so far this season, that adds up to 249. :thumb:

How is Newport's line as far as quickness? This is where the game will be won. The Devils' D & O lines played very well against the considerably bigger Mercer County line. Most of the Scotties yardage, other than penalties, came after the score was 34-6 and they had a little of the "Russell Relax"...that combined with the fact the size difference began to wear down some of the kids and LB Josh Wills went out with an injury. When that happened, Mercer put some drives together. Wills was begging to go back in, but with the margin and the big game this week, there wasn't a need to risk it. He should be back 100 % for Newport. With the quickness of the front 7 for Russell, I think they should be able to disrupt the Wildcats' offense and I really don't see Newport being able to consistently stop the wing-t, especially with the very effective passing game Coach McGlone has this year with Tommy Brown. I fully expect a tough game and if the kids don't prepare and come ready to play they could easily lose. That being said, I feel Russell takes it by 2 TD's.

As for this week's game, I feel this is a better match up for Russell than Mercer was. The Devils have had more problems with the bigger physical teams. Not that RHS doesn't play physical football, but the team doesn't always match up with regards to size. Coach Morris has a pretty good record against teams that like to spread it out. Looking at recent games against common opponents, Russell handled Mercer and Fleming as well as East. Newport struggled against two of these teams and had the same margin against the other. Should be a good game, but I feel Russell gets one more at home this season as Ivan gets win #250 (to go with his 9th regional championship) Friday at Newport.

Personally, I agree that it should be all seed or none seed. I don't really care which it is, but I feel it would be most equitable for ALL districts to be one or the other.

Great job by the Russell players last night! A very physical game and the Red Devils were able to step up and get the W in the type of game they usually do not fare well in (a bigger, physical team). I truly believe that the Boyd County game way back in week 3 prepared the players for this type of game. This Mercer County team was probably the most physical team, with the possible exception of the aforementioned BC Lions, Russell has faced this season. Chad Edwards had a huge game with somewhere around 170 yards rushing. Casey Clark had another big game with 4 more TD's to run his season total to 34. Defensively, Russell was able to hold the Mercer offense in check for the most part before wearing down in the latter parts of the game. Another thing that hurt the Devils was some shaky pass coverage that was more the result of focusing on the running game as anything. The coaches hadn't seen any real passing game from them on film, although with the ability the QB showed throwing it, I'm surprised they don't do more of that. I have all the confidence in the world that Coach Morris will have the defense well prepared for Newport next Friday. All that being said, the Scotties showed no quit, even when the outcome was decided. They played hard all game long and their fans and coaches showed nothing but class afterward (at least that's all I saw). In the other thread, someone from MC mentioned the "iffy" hospitality. I truly believe and hope their's was the exception as opposed to the rule. RHS goes to great strides to ensure a good experience for our visitors win or lose.

True that...at least I think that's how the kids say it...:lol: I may have to arrange alternative travel arrangements so I can stay and visit some old friends from the area. Maybe get help to celebrate or commiserate...

So are you saying Boyd was the only good team Russell played this year? And I believe the Devils did have some success running against BC going for 166 yards on 36 carries. Too many TO's and poor defensive play combined with a superior effort by the Lions cost Russell in that one.

I expect it to take them back home to roll out the basketballs after Friday...

Russell's not looking ahead and I believe Newport has another tough game before they can host next week anyway. What I have seen on film is a big line, not the most mobile though. Much like Henry County in that respect. I fully expect a hard fought contest that goes to Russell. The team is confident in their abilities and they know what they have to do to get to the next game. They have been through this whole process many times now and when you have that experience, it makes a difference. Comparing common opponents, which gives a bit of insight to how the game plays out, the Red Devils certainly seem to have the edge. Don't look for that to change...

Wishful thinking from Tomcat Nation??? I'm not sure if Mercer will be able to contend with Russell's team speed. Morgan has some, but not as much across the board IMO.

Whatever... NOWHERE in my post did I say anything close to what you claim. Merely pointing out the FACT that Russell has played a far tougher schedule than the Scotties have. I see this as being an intriguing match up of similarities and contrasts. The similar style that each team prefer is to run, run and run some more. The contrasts being Mercer has a size advantage while I believe Russell has the edge in team speed. The fact the game is at home and the tougher schedule give the Red Devils the advantage.

BuffaloGap doesn't agree, but this is more telling of what these two teams have gone through in the course of the season. Obviously, Russell has played better competition when you look at it. One team (Russell) has played teams with a combined winning percentage of just over .505 while the other (Mercer) has played a schedule with an overall winning percentage of .370.

He wasn't trying to impress anyone by listing that Russell dresses about 60, merely stating a fact. When you have numbers, injuries are less devastating than to a team like Morgan where one injury gets magnified that much more. Russell, and it sounds like Mercer, have more to choose from in the way of replacement parts...

Honestly, very likely 1-9 and no better than 3-7 in favor of Ashland. Russell was just able to take better advantage of Ashland's mistakes last night.

Looks like this wasn't quite the reversal of last year's shellacking that some Tomcat fans predicted. These games usually never are that one-sided and it looks like tonight was more of the same. These close games at this level should mean we have several more good battles to look forward to on the varsity level the next few years.

Seats on one side of the field is not exactly an uncommon thing around high school sports. Painter, I didn't know that about Putnam's home locker rooms. The last time I was there, they were pretty nasty too, but then that was late November of 2002...

Not here...the locker rooms at Putnam are a joke. The really sad thing is that the home team's isn't any better than the visitors. Both are dank, nasty dungeonesque places that cry out for remodeling. Does HGTV have a locker room spruce up show...maybe Designing for the Jocks or Trading Locker Spaces...
