This question has been passed around a lot lately and with Lawrence playing some of their best games the past years against State Champ and Regional Champ Belfry who is a AA squad, would it make more sense for a small AAA school to drop back down to AA where most of their success was? I personally think if Lawrence COULD drop down that they should.

No question! I think they would have won at least one if not multiple state titles in 2A and would be a fixture among the top 5 in the state year in year out in 2A. They aren't close from being 2A.

They are one of the smaller 3A schools. There are people that are closer to being 2A but they aren't too far off.

They need to drop back down to AA and constantly year in and year out compete with teams like P'Burg, Belfry, Sheldon Clark and Breathitt. Even with teams like Leslie Co. as well.

Life would be much easier I think but they can't dictate what class they are in. It's all done by enrollment. Maybe if some of the other kids keep going to the Christian school there the numbers will go down as far as enrollment and they will be back to 2A.

LC is a 3A team...that is where they need to compete. There are a few teams that are smaller than LC that do quite well in 3A.

Highlands and......

According to KHSAA, Madison Southern, Highlands, and Paducah Tilghman are smaller than Lawerence Co.

Bell Co & Rockcastle Co have only a handful of students more than Lawerence.

Lawrence Co. really only has '98 and '99 on which to hang their hats. These were the only two years LC would have been "Top 5" contenders in 2A (they were also 3A "Top 5" those years, though). Whether they could have defeated Caldwell Co. or Boyle Co. (the respective 2A champs those years), I'll leave to fans of those teams to debate.

Please don't get me wrong, I like Bulldog football. But time time have a way of making the "good years" brightly color more years of the past when "recent times" have been tough.

Every 3a team in the state would do better if they were in 2a since they are a bigger school.

On a side not Western Hills in Frankfort has a lower enrollement right now than several 2a schools around the state.

They have beaten Belfrey and gone down to the last second with them a couple of times. I think they would stay around the top 5 in AA. It's all mute, they are 3A and that's not changing. I know they work their tails off so hopefully they will see rewards from it.
