Would Lawrence Co. do better in AA?

Featured Replies

They have beaten Belfrey and gone down to the last second with them a couple of times. I think they would stay around the top 5 in AA. It's all mute, they are 3A and that's not changing. I know they work their tails off so hopefully they will see rewards from it.

Not to take anything away from the way the Bulldogs have played Belfry recently, but let's look at how they have been competing with Russell. Keep in mind that this is only at the JV and freshmen level because Russell's district schedule doesn't leave anymore openings in their non-district schedule after the Big 3.

The past few years, these teams have played even with each team coming out on top a few times and most every game being close. Russell has been AA regional champs 3 out of the past 4 seasons and we all know they won state this season.

Keep in mind that Lawrence usually seems to have a few of those kids that are a little older than a typical freshman so they generally have a decided size advantage over the Red Devils. Another thing is that Russell's freshmen and JV teams typically have no players who are also playing up, by which I mean if you are good enough to play at a higher level than your classmates, you don't play with them. The Red Devils coaches see freshman and JV games as a chance to get players some experience and to improve. No need to have Friday night guys playing on Mondays, etc. Not saying LC does this, but I just wanted to make it clear the Bulldogs have not always seen the absolute best athletes in these classes when playing Russell, and still they have been unable to dominate them.

I hope I have made that clear...seems about as clear as mud to me right now. Anyway, personally, I feel this shows that while Lawrence would certainly be more competitive in 2A (as was already stated, what 3A school wouldn't be) they would not necessarily be dominate. To say they would have multiple titles might be stretching it a bit... :thumb:

I think this question falls under the category of "DUH!"

I would say that Russell is a fixture in the top 5 in 2A. JV and Freshmen can be deceiving but when Russell and LC used to play at the varsity level it was a toss up. I was glad to see Russell win it all this year as they are alwyas one of the top programs in the state. Coach Morris and Coach Sparks have Louisa roots too! They both coached me:)

Maybe they should try 1a I think they would do well in that division also.

So would Western Hills what's your point? They are AAA they are working hard to get to the next level and they will get there. The question was asked because they used to be AA. I think most in the state will agree that AAA is much tougher than AA so this thread has probably run it's course.

Short answer is YES.

Look at Breathitt.

Although, in defense of Breathitt, the stars were aligned. Not only did we drop to 2A, but it coincided with by far the greatest influx of talent the school has ever had (95-98) and the switch to a high-octane passing offense. That aside, with the exception of this past season, Breathitt has remained very competitive in the class.

Cant wait for these two schools to collide on the field this year. :thumb:

This thread was started with the knowledge of Lawrence County believe in AA for many years before they moved up to AAA. A lot of success was achieved in Louisa during the teams time in AA.

What about this what if Lawrence Co. had two high schools maybe a 1-a and one 2-a high school???? What people need to look at is Lawrence Co. is the third largest county in the state and the high school is all the way on one end of the county some kids have to ride a school bus for more than two hours just to get to school so you can just guess way a lot of kids don't play sports when you have to practice for two and a half hour's then drive for another hour to get home well that make's it hard I know because that's what I had to do when I played for LC. Kids that live close to thier schools can practice for a couple of hours and still have time to do other things like go to Church or a movie or maybe go and see thier girl friend or maybe try and find one any way's . Where the kids in LC that live way out they might have time to get home after practice and eat thier supper and maybe do thier home work if they will . All I am saying is that LC has a lot of huddles to cross .But I think they do just fine were they are I would like to know how many varisty teams in the state in 2-a and 3-a that just dressed 20 some kids out and was still competitive.

I agree with you completely... the Bulldog players from Blaine, Little Cat, etc. would have to be the MOST devoted football players on the team to give up so much to play.

But you last sentence could be seen another way... Do you think there are many true 3A schools that can only dress 20 players ??

Sometimes I wonder if today's generation is less willing to give up so much to play the game...

LC still has a lot of talent coming back for next year however.

I think they missed the opportunity for a really good rivalry. Not saying it's a bad idea to play...I'm all for it, but had they played after Lawrence Co. snapped the streak, it would have been a great regular season game. I can understand not wanting to play a team that you had a strong likelihood of seeing in the post-season though.

I agree with your statement, after the 1997 game the two AD's shoud have sat down and came up with a way to get these two teams back on the field every year after that in some kind of contract. Hopefully this game will be the start of it all. :thumb:

It won't be the same. Breathitt's football isn't on the same level and fan interest isn't the same. But, like I said, I still think its a good idea, but not as good as it could have been.
