It has been awhile since the Cardinals have travelled to Elkton for a game against TCC, but we are headed there this week. No getting around it, this is a mismatch. The Rebels have one win on the season, and their losses have been mostly lopsided. Mayfield is coming off a thorough defeat of Crittenden County having a running clock with a minute left in the first quarter. If the Cardinals are focused like last week, this game may look similar to that one.

Running clock in the first quarter. Coach Dew must have laid down the law concerning penalties. I think we finished the game with ZERO penalties! That is quite a turnaround from last week.

The long and winding road that is the 1st district 2A schedule begins this week with the CC Rockets coming to War Memorial to play the “banged up” Mayfield Cardinals. It is a big bang at that. On the second play of the game, Josiah England ran to the outside and down the sideline for what looked to be a possible touchdown. He never made it there. A hamstring tear took him to the ground. Sigh. It’s hard to watch any player get sidelined by an injury. So the Rockets will not have to concern themselves with Josiah England, but they will still have a challenge trying to keep up with the number of quality running backs that Mayfield has. CC is coming off a win against Union City, and I will add that the Rockets are one of the few teams in WKY that own a win over Mayfield at War Memorial. Can they do it again? Tell us what you think.

Our running backs ran hard tonite, and picked up the slack left by the injury to Josiah on the second play of the game. It looks like a hamstring injury, but no official word on that yet. We really enjoyed watching Overstreet carry the ball for Mayfield! Robbins threw the ball much better tonite than he did last week. One more thing, Newman ran the ball for McCracken County like he expected to break every tackle and score on every carry. He was a joy to watch last night. GO BIG RED!

Wow! Last week PT was firing on all cylinders, but that doesn’t seem to be the case last night. Absolutely not taking anything away from the Maroons, that is a great win for them!

I have not heard anything concerning that

The McCracken County Mustangs invade War Memorial Stadium this week, and the big question is this: Can Mayfield put the stinging loss to Paducah Tilghman behind them and be ready for the Mustangs? The answer is yes. This is not the first time the Cardinals have had to overcome a loss to PT. McCracken County has not developed into the power program that they desire to be, but Mayfield will need to have their “heads in the game” when they play. It seems to be just the right time to beat the Cardinals, but do the Mustangs have the horsepower (I know, bad joke) to get it done? Do the Cardinals shake off last week’s loss and take it out on McCracken County, or do the Mustangs seize the opportune moment and deal Mayfield it’s second loss in consecutive weeks? All the valid points have been made, and I agree with them. We did a good job stopping the run, but had NO answer for their passing game. Well done Big Blue. One more thing, and it is an observation not a criticism. I thought it was unwise to have Crowe still in the game with 3:00 to go leading 55-29. He even ran the ball. Yikes! They cannot afford to lose him. IMO ?

The PT administation has gone to great lengths to shut all livestream coverage of the game but their own. Its a pay site from what I have been told, so I get it. No hard feelings toward them, but it is a disservice to all of the people who watch the Cardinals on RHS from all over the nation. Game wise, Big Blue passing attack has been on point, and we can't seem to stop them. Weird night for this Cardinal fan. ?

The end of last week’s win against Graves County was so bizarre that few people are even talking about what happened on the field. On the field, Mayfield soundly defeated the Eagles in all phases of the game. With Grey Robbins at the QB position and Malik Kirby as a WR (instead of QB), the Cardinals are noticeably better. Give credit to the Eagles defense, they mostly kept Josiah England from breaking free at all. But they were not able to stop anybody else. If not for the penalties, the score would have been even more lopsided. Up next are the Colonels of Christian County who have struggled in recent years to be very competitive. Have they improved enough to give Mayfield a fight? Do the Cardinals roll? Tell us what you think.

Didn’t Graves Co defeat BG in the semifinals in 2015? That game was in Bowling Green, but I do not know if it was at WKU or BG.

Graves Co made a point of not letting Josiah England loose to run all over them, but Mayfield has other weapons, and the Eagles had no answer for them. One thing is for sure, the Cardinals are better with Robbins at QB. Glad to see him playing tonight.

So now begins season two of the Cliff Dew coached Mayfield Cardinals, and crosstown rival Graves County is up first. Coach Dew is 0-1 against the Eagles after losing to them last season, and let’s just say that expectations are HIGH from Cardinal fans to start this year off with a victory To add to the drama, the backup quarterback for Mayfield last year is the starting quarterback for Graves County THIS year. It is extra flavor added to an emotion packed rivalry game. Do the Cardinals overcome the injury to their starting quarterback and get the win, or does Graves County win two in a row for the first time ever? Tell us what you think.

The 1978 semi-final that we played at Ft Knox was so cold that I can barely recall anything about that win. But I definitely remember how cold it was. ?

This is really unfortunate for those student athletes that qualified for the state meet on Wednesday only to be told that it does not count. I honestly don't know what else the Khsaa could do other than this though. Tough year for Region 1 Class A track. The original meet had to be postponed a day because of storms, and now this.

The 2024 season ended with an uncharacteristic beat down of the Cardinals, AT War Memorial no less, at the hands of the LCA Eagles in the third round of the class 2A playoffs. That was a bitter pill to swallow, but that one is in the history books and all eyes are now focused on the 2025 season. At first glance, there is alot to be excited about as most of the skill positions on offense return for next year. Grey Robbins is expected to return at quarterback along with running back, Josiah England, who has Cardinal fans talking about the running game again. The receiving corp is back fully intact. Both Hoover and Kirby will return along with Will Morris at tight end who missed much of last season with an injury. The real question will be the offensive line. This is an offensive line that got dominated by the LCA defense. On defense, Mayfield loses a four year starter at linebacker in Ian Williams. But the upside is there are younger players coming up that will step in to that position. Mayfield has played a nine game schedule for the past two years. It will be interesting to see if we can find an opponent to fill that slot. So what do you think? Can the Cardinals get back to Lexington to play for another state title?

I do not see how they could vote Atwell rather than Hayden as the QB for this team. Hayden WON 2 state championships while Atwell won zero. Also, when they played head to head this year in the state final, Hayden led his team to a title that really wasn't close. that's my two pennies on that.

I think Beechwood was underrated this year in every poll/rating. I have stated that exact thing for the entire season. It makes me really question our ranking system.
