So now begins season two of the Cliff Dew coached Mayfield Cardinals, and crosstown rival Graves County is up first. Coach Dew is 0-1 against the Eagles after losing to them last season, and let’s just say that expectations are HIGH from Cardinal fans to start this year off with a victory

To add to the drama, the backup quarterback for Mayfield last year is the starting quarterback for Graves County THIS year. It is extra flavor added to an emotion packed rivalry game. Do the Cardinals overcome the injury to their starting quarterback and get the win, or does Graves County win two in a row for the first time ever? Tell us what you think.

This game is one of the reasons I enjoyed PT and McCracken being on a Saturday. It allowed me to check this game out. 

I enjoyed myself at this game last season as much as any game I went to. It was electric. So many big plays!

I'm not sure what to expect here, but it has the feels of another great game. Good luck to both, I know this means a lot and you just can't beat a cross-town rivalry game in high school football. 

This looks to be another classic between these two.

 
Graves is very high on their skill talent they have. Two questios: how will the OLine handle Mayfield’s pressure? Jace Houston is finally a starter (3rd school in 3 years). Can he march the Eagles to victory?

Mayfield has a key injury in starting QB Grey Robbins.  Kirby is very capable athlete to make the Cardinal offense work but they do lose his big play ability on the outside.  Also, how much defense does he play?  At the end of the day, when in doubt for the Cardinals, feed that monster in the backfield (England) early and often.

With what Graves lost from last year and with the injuries heading into the season for Mayfield this one is hard to get a feel for. That being said I think Mayfield has enough to get the job done.

I love that we start the season off with a bang with these two teams. Last year Graves County finally broke the 15 game losing streak and beat the Cardinals at home. This year they travel about a mile down the road to War Memorial to play their cross town rival once again. Mayfield returns a bulk of playmakers in Malik Kirby, Diego Torres, Mak Hoover, Will Morris, and of course probably their best player Josiah England. The issue for Mayfield, their starting quarterback isn't expected to play and apparently they don't have a backup and have been running Kirby at Qb in scrimmages. For the second year in a row a transfer from Mayfield to Graves could have a huge impact on the game. Last year Lincoln Acree scored tds, made interceptions, and had a huge part in an Eagles victory. He's gone but another transfer from Mayfield will be on the field at the..... quarterback position. Jace Houston has looked sharp in the scrimmages and has a plethora of receivers to throw the ball too. Cavette, Mathis, Vecausovic being the returning starters. The question mark for Graves. They have to replace every offensive linemen and almost every defensive linemen. 

After the scrimmages this past weekend I think most people will be favoring Mayfield after handeling Murray pretty easily, while Graves and Henderson scrimmage was pretty close. I think it should be a fun game to kickoff the season and I'm hoping the Eagles can prevail. If Mayfield becomes one dimensional I think we can walk away with the win. They may try to use alot of screens but the last couple of years our corners have been excellent at stopping screens. So I don't think they can screen us to death and must push the ball downfield. If they keep us balanced by doin so, then it will be hard to stop England. 

Final Prediction: Eagles 35 Cards 28.

I expect this game to fairly close. I think Houston finally has his chance to show he can be serviceable qb. As long as mayfield’s defense doesn’t give up big plays like last year, they should win this game.

I was told from my nephew that mayfields qb has been practicing and he’s supposed to be cleared to play by Friday. He said he looks really good in practice.

Mayfield doesn't lose two years in a row if Robbins is back that's good news for them 100%. 

I didn't realize Graves graduated so many starters from last year.  While Houston didn't look good in his playing time at Mayfield last year, there's a difference between playing 5-10 snaps a game versus being handed the keys and being able to play without looking over your shoulder.  Maybe he has turned the corner.  Tough first game for Graves considering how many new starters they will be breaking in.  All in all, they have done a great job of raising the floor for their program.  They are fielding a competitive team every season lately, and it didn't used to be that way.

Mayfield offense drastically changes depending on who is behind center.  Regardless of who that may be, the Cards need to be able to run the ball to have success this year.  O-line struggled at times last year.  Hopefully they can take a step forward this season.  Defense is pretty solid.

Mayfield should win this game. I like the score to be somewhere in the 35-14 range. England should have a big year. The best thing Mayfield can do is to shut down the running game for  Graves and put in the hands of the Graves QB. He's never played with alot of pressure on him, so a little baptism by fire and see what he can do.
