I’m amazed that there are teams that do morning practices for football. Maybe because my high school coach was very adamant that we stay off the game field unless it was absolutely necessary, and as such didn’t have lights available, but we never practiced before 8 AM during summer or after 7 PM during school. In regards to heat, pads came off at index 95, and practice stopped at 100. We would occasionally go inside the gym for practice if it wasn’t being used by basketball or volleyball, though this was rare.

Some of my most memorable times as a student at Shelby County High School Happened during homecoming week. Much like Somerset we had a theme every day of the week that we were encouraged to dress out in. Friday afternoon, we had the homecoming parade down rocket Lane. We would start at Shelby East middle school, and make our way down rocket lane passing Wright Elementary school to the cheers of students and our former teachers alike, before entering the gym at Shelby County high for a pep rally. We felt like WWE wrestlers with the entrance music and everything, it made us feel like superheroes. My mother, who graduated from Shelby County in the 80s, would tell me stories of how the parade would also include a trip down Main Street in Shelbyville, with the cheerleaders followed by all of the fall athletes marching their way down the road to the cheers and applause of the residents of the city who would step outside of their homes to watch the show. My first homecoming week is when I really realized just how magical high school football can be.

I think there is a very good chance that Boyle defeats them. Other than that, I don’t believe they lose before CovCath.

Final from Shelbyville. Both teams had turnover problems, but the Rockets were able to recover from them in the second half to take (and keep) the lead. Zach Miracle- Shelby County’s QB- also had 2 interceptions on the defensive side, at free safety. Both teams have lots of potential this season. Eager to see how far they go.

With the knowledge of what Collins did to Shelby County right after they opened, and what South Oldham did to Oldham County right after they opened, I think this was more so just Scott County trying to show that they are still a high caliber team that is capable of a deep playoff run. Classy? No. But I think I can understand why they did it.

The main difference between this scenario and those two scenarios is that Scott county is coming off a season in which they went to the state championship game, and they’ve had an undefeated state champion season earlier this decade, they’ve been a consistent threat to reach week four of the playoffs for the better part of the last 10 years. They keep that same coach and they probably don’t see a reason to leave if they’ve already got a good system going on. Shelby County and Oldham County, while they were both good programs at the time of their splits, weren’t quite in the same echelon as Scott County is right now. Granted, both Shelby County and Oldham County have rebounded and are back to their winning ways; I just don’t think Scott County is going to stop rolling given what they’ve been able to accomplish under Coach McKee.

Oh my goodness... terrible, terrible news. Prayers and love to Caldwell County. Rest in peace, Coach. Thank you for making such a positive impact on young lives in your community. You will be missed.

During my playing days at Shelby County we averaged roughly 40 on the roster, plus about 10 from the team that went to semi-state when I was a freshman. The school had roughly 1,000 students 9-12 when I was in high school, so about 5% participation rate.

38 is far too young. Praying for his family, his children in particular.

They lose a 4 year starting LB/RB (Carias) and 2 O-Lineman, but other than that they return quite a bit of talent, including their QB.

Very unfortunate news to hear for the young man given the adversity he’s had to overcome. Prayers for him.

I agree with your top five. Collins returns the best backcourt in the region, and South returns the defending region player of the year Luke Morrison in addition to I believe three of their other five starters if I’m not mistaken. North Oldham should be much better next year now that they have Powell back. 29th district is going to be very competitive. The 30th district will also be interesting as they add Woodford County.

4A seems to be the most wide open of the six classes. I wouldn’t be extremely surprised to see a team outside of this top 10 win a regional championship. It seems like all of those teams outside of Boyle are losing a good chunk of their starters.

I feel bad for Henderson County having to make that drive to Lawrenceburg.

Shelby was emotionally charged and ready to play as this was their first game since the passing of their teammate Blake Palmer in a car accident in February. I think that was the main factor in their performance tonight.

Is he connected in anyway to Quentin?

They all look like pretty winnable games honestly. Central is easily their toughest opponent, but if they can pull off the upset I wouldn’t be surprised if they win their district. Great Crossing is a mystery, Anderson will be a tough game as well.

Tough break having Central added to their district. Not helping matters is the fact that it is a road game for the Flyers. It will be interesting, however, to see how their youth pans out this season.

Based on what I saw at the state tournament, Madisonville should be near the top of the rankings to start next season. I’m an 8th Region guy personally and Collins returns one of the best back courts in the state so they should also be a contender. Also in the eighth, South Oldham returns four of their five starters and the reigning eighth region player of the year Luke Morrison. They will be able to shoot the lights out and will cause headaches to defenses next year.

Is Martin County ditching the name Sheldon Clark? If I recall correctly their end zones read “Martin County” but interesting nonetheless.

Great Crossing likely won’t affect Scott County’s numbers all that much for the first 2 years as upperclassmen can elect to stay at SCHS. This will be a huge job to fill even with the new school coming and I fully expect a statewide search if not a national one. Scott County Middle School will still feed Scott County High, and they have consistently been the best feeder program of the three middle schools in Scott County. I’m not a Scott County guy, but I hope they hire an established coach that can continue the program’s success. Some names I think would at least entertain the idea of taking over would be Coy Zerhusen of Oldham County, Aric Russell of Campbell County, and Brandon Salsman of LexCath.

I firmly believe that Coach Jones is the best coach in the state without a region title.

Great insight as always Chief. I’m glad to see a football coach emphasizing the importance of track. When I played in high school not that long ago, our coach would always bring in players one on one for individual meetings immediately after football season to tell them about how important it is to do track during the football off-season as a way to stay in shape and work on fundamentals that could help them on the gridiron. A receiver or backfield player running sprints and linemen doing shotput and discus works on speed and strength that they may not otherwise develop, and I hope more coaches can continue to emphasize how track and football complement each other very smoothly.

Congrats Reese! Always very happy when a player from the Commonwealth can continue their career at any level, but to commit to a Power 5 when he has a whole season left back home has me very excited for Boyle’s upcoming season.
