Homecoming Traditions

Featured Replies

What traditions does/did your high school have for homecoming each year?

At Somerset, each day of homecoming weeks is themed and students/teachers are encouraged to dress to the theme. This started years ago at the high school and has now spread to the elementary and middle schools as well.

There is a week-long "Spirit Competition" between classes. It is based on participation in dressing up, tug-o-war, pep rally spirit, and best float.

Each class spends 5 nights building a parade float based on the homecoming overall theme.

There is a parade of about two miles from the high school, through downtown where a brief pep rally breaks out on the city square and continues to the middle school where the football field is.

There is a reception area at the football field for all former Briar Jumper Football players.

Of course the half-time crowning of the homecoming queen.

Some of my most memorable times as a student at Shelby County High School Happened during homecoming week. Much like Somerset we had a theme every day of the week that we were encouraged to dress out in. Friday afternoon, we had the homecoming parade down rocket Lane. We would start at Shelby East middle school, and make our way down rocket lane passing Wright Elementary school to the cheers of students and our former teachers alike, before entering the gym at Shelby County high for a pep rally. We felt like WWE wrestlers with the entrance music and everything, it made us feel like superheroes. My mother, who graduated from Shelby County in the 80s, would tell me stories of how the parade would also include a trip down Main Street in Shelbyville, with the cheerleaders followed by all of the fall athletes marching their way down the road to the cheers and applause of the residents of the city who would step outside of their homes to watch the show. My first homecoming week is when I really realized just how magical high school football can be.

Giant bonfire the night before. I vaguely remember piling 11 people (including me) into my mother’s 1966 Mustang convertible after the festivities one year.

I'm guessing the top was down and it was as much onto as into.

Frankfort has a parade where each class designs a float, along with other entries from the community.
