I don’t think I’ve ever heard of at least 3/4 opening round region tournament games all going to DOUBLE OT. Three straight at that. Southwestern & West Jess? Don’t screw this up. ?

No doubt, however, while true, I think the "6A" thing and it's powers are a bit magnified from the standpoint of this: The current 6 class set up has created the big 3-6 & then "everybody else" in practically every class (vast majority of years). Take 2A just as an example. The only ones beating Beechwood, Mayfield, O'Cath, LCA & Somerset? Themselves. With Belfry moving down? Make it the "Big 6" CAL has 3A on lock and looks to have for the foreseeable future & to be quite honest, if Central didn't somehow find themselves as low as they've seemingly been in the RPI? It's realistically been a 2 horse race in that class. I firmly believe Central is the 2nd best team (and, this year they went 1-1 vs CAL- and, that's zero knock whatsoever to other's who have made their runs in 3A the last few years)- depending on the trajectory of LexCath going forward? Throw them into the mix. 4A? The only people beating Boyle, Corbin, Johnson Central, CovCath, Tilghman, Franklin County & throw in Ashland? Themselves. So on and so forth. If I'm the new coach coming in or looking at this job, one of the biggest concerns for me would be the fact that the principal and AD who hire me (both whom are FABULOUS by the way), aren't likely going to be the one's I'm going to be working for past next season or two, at the most. They've done their time and at a very highly supportive level (among other strengths). Are there fully capable admin in the building that see/support things as they do who are more than capable? Absolutely. However, do they get hired or better yet, even want those positions? To be determined.

I, for one, really really appreciate this. Spot on. Just had this conversation yesterday along these same lines and my point , along with yours as well (so it seems)? Youth football is a bigger detriment to the game than it helps, or at best 50-50.

Correct, his last season at W.E was in ‘93, then as an assistant at BG in ‘94-‘95 before taking over late in the summer of ‘96. No doubt he learned some things from everything great that Coach Haley was, but what he also realized is that there is a reason why “Mules don’t run in the Kentucky Derby.” Nick Saban himself in a reason interview on the Pivot Podcast made the comment that: “I realized real quick early on that I wasn’t very good at coaching bad athletes to be good players”. (I love this even more real, candid, retired Nick Saban more than the always Coachey McCoacherson version. Things he’s obviously always felt/knew, but probably couldn’t say outright to the public). I think the biggest question in regards to hiring process is who all actually applied? Very seldom, if ever, do coaches at really good programs leave for the same. At least not in Kentucky & if they do? It’s usually for reasons much deeper than football (family ties, better job/pay for their wife as well- in education or outside of it, etc)

Kevin Wallace was the same while at Warren East for 10 years in the mid 80’s to mid 90’s. • 15-20 games below .500 • Not a single winning record season • Not one playoff win. Then? The rest is history. Chris McNamee at Pikeville? Same. He had a four year stint at Pike County Central back in the 2000’s where it was all 4 win seasons. Gets the Pikeville job back? Voila Point being? There are a lot more bad football programs in the state than there are bad coaches (obviously Warren East isn’t the same Warren East of then & I’d think anybody with half a brain, whether they coached there/coach there or not, would attribute a lot of that to the growth in that area compared to 40-30 years ago). Beechwood? Their new HC? Won two games at a perennial dumpster fire in Ohio over a 2-3 year span. Gets the Beechwood job? And they haven’t missed a beat The overall W/L record of a person doesn’t tell the whole story or even close. You have to look beyond that: • Program history? What was it like before them? What was it like after them? • Number of coaches altogether and/or in a particular span of years, especially if it was a revolving door dumpster fire. Reasons beyond the coach(es) IMVHO. On and on and on, but you get the point.

There are many bad takes on here that fall under: 1. Hater 2. Don't know what they don't know 3. Mix of both But this one ranks at the top, of what I hope (for you), falls under the 1 spot.

Not sure about pre 1998 or not, but pretty positive his 2017 season at Ohio was and still is one of ONLY THREE winning seasons that Ohio County has had in AT LEAST the last 27 years. The other two belonging to Mike Settles and Todd Houston. I'd also venture to guess the 4-6 season in '19 is a game or maybe even two above average for the history of their program. Could be the best hire ever, could be a train wreck. Who knows... However, those two seasons alone in the land between Beaver Dam and Hartford Says all I need to know about his capabilities.

That’s right. I forgot about no spring practice, like you, unless something has changed recently (the late, great Ty Scroggins and Lou. Central didn’t, either). Now that you mention “something different” with their (Scott County) freshmen, I’m not so sure they even include them in a full blown “offseason” during the winter and spring months, either. I’m thinking some kind of modified version where they bring them in on 10-12 specific dates during the spring semester(s) of their 8th grade years.

Yes on the freshmen. About positive Jim McKee does this at Scott County and has for almost his entire tenure there. Those guys don’t come out until the first Monday in/around August 1. Obviously not all programs can do that, though. @barrel ? Am I right on that or way off and thinking somebody else?

I'm not for backing it up due to heat. Like I said earlier in that original post- the heat in August and September is every bit as much and even more than it is in July as we all know. However, do I think starting practice when KY does impacts numbers to a degree at many of our very rural “county” schools due to transportation issues with some families? Absolutely.

For the record, I’m not for shortening the number of regular season games played. Actually, I’d like to see it moved to an 11 game regular season + a later start date, and for a revamp of the entire post season. All of which that would still have things ending the first weekend of December. But that's for an entirely different topic/thread.

100% agree And not necessarily bc of the heat, because it’s cooking in August, even into September as much or more than it is in July. But due to most school districts having now switched to their school start dates to in and around the first week of August for the last 20 years or so? You’d see a lot less transportation issues for the many of the programs across the state. And let me just go ahead and get out in front of this for the ones against a later start for worry that kids in our state will miss out on “development” with a later start date compared to the Georgia, California, Florida and Texas’ of the world. **Newsflash** We don’t & won’t EVER have the copious amount of raw DUDES those states have. It’s not anywhere near as much a development thing as it is DNA & numbers thing- by a disproportionate amount. Kentucky HS Football trying to measure up to those states would be about like expecting Miami (OH) to catch up with Miami (FL) on a regular basis. ….ain’t happening (pre transfer portal for sure wasn’t). And, this goes without saying the fact that colleges at practically every level don’t start practice until around that August 1 mark, with a Labor Day weekend opening game. Even better? The highest level of our game in the world? It doesn’t open until the SECOND weekend of September. Meanwhile…high school football here & and several other states? Nah. “Boys of Fall”? More like “Boys of Summer”. Makes total sense. (No sarcasm there whatsoever, nope, none.)

It's a heck of a match up to end the regular season for the programs as a whole. Other than that? What's ultimately going to help Mayfield is that 4,908 of their 4,964 yards & 551 of their points of their 587 total, in 2024, returns. Not to mention 10 of their top 15 defensive performers, anchored by yet, another Starks for the solid red helmets of WKY.

That's the case for most teams with most of their wins.

They have been. In ‘22 they were the Class A Runner-Up down in Tennessee. I don’t think they will remotely be able to match up anywhere on the field with Glasgow, though, especially in the speed department. Friday nights in Celina, TN have been much, much better than what they were previously accustomed to prior to 2016-2017 or so, though.

To use Texas as an example, go check the link below & he is just an assistant & not a coordinator (I say “just” to emphasize what his schedule is during the day). Take note of the times during the day and doing what. 1- Underclassmen practice in the morning, during the day. (1st block) 2- He teaches 2 classes (2nd & 3rd block) 3- 4th block? “Planning”, AKA, get ready for the Varsity football practice Forney HS isn’t even a powerhouse. Alabama, too. But you’re right. They also aren’t teaching or if they are, they might have a couple classes a day & if those couple classes are in school weights? They also have some of their assistants in there with them as well. Not to mention many of them are making 100K+ & some of those are closer to the 200K mark than they are the 100k.

Why would they leave the good/great jobs they are already in?
