St X travels to Trinity Thursday for the 1st of 2 regular season meetings. While this is the opener for X, Trinity opened their season last Saturday morning with a loss to Carmel (IN). However, Trinity’s starting QB left the game with what was believed to be a broken collar bone and didn’t return. This group of St X freshmen is said to be very talented but you never know how they will respond in their first game. If Trinity’s QB is out, you would have to wonder how effective their backup QB will play. With St X dressing ~80 players, it may take them awhile to figure out getting the right combination of players on the field. Even though it’s only one game, the fact that Trinity has a game under their belt may help them get off to a good start. But you never know with these young guys. I think the St X offense starts slow but their defense keeps Trinity from getting any early momentum. Once the X offense figures it out they should be able control the ball with a solid running attack and short passes. Make it: St X - 28. Trinity - 7

Male has their spring game this Friday 4-26 at 4:00.

Do most schools have a spring game? I haven’t seen anything posted here but I would like to see if any games have been scheduled. I need that spring football fix.

Any idea when schools finalize and release non-varsity schedules? I know there are problems in filling these schedules, especially in Jefferson Co, because of numbers. Interested in where schools will have to travel this season in order to complete their schedule. In the past schools such as Trinity and STX have gone to northern KY, Cincinnati and Lexington to play games on Saturday because not all schools on their varsity schedule field freshmen and JV teams.

You are correct guru. Championship game officials are not chosen on merit. It’s usually based on who has never worked a championship game or hasn’t worked one recently. I sometimes shake my head and wonder how certain officials are selected. But to your point, replay would be a way to correct obvious errors which could potentially cost a team a state championship.

Back in the 60s they would get a lot of the players from the Newberg area that eventually would go to Thomas Jefferson HS before it opened. Former UK players Phil Thompson & Darryl Bishop come to mind. Class AAA was the highest football classification in the 60s and Seneca was the AAA state champion in 1965 beating Flaget.

Replay would be an option for playoffs only. I can see the KHSAA approving its use only for the state finals.

I can remember when Seneca was a powerhouse. Their program went down fast.

Charlie Finley wanted to move the A’s from KC to Louisville and play in Fairgrounds Stadium (the original name) but the owners voted against the move. Instead, he later got enough votes to move the team to Oakland. And the rest is history

Demolition was scheduled to begin today on Old Cardinal Stadium in Louisville (even though I still refer to it as Fairgrounds Stadium). A lot of memories from that old stadium will remain with anybody who was ever there. Jefferson Co football playoff & state championship games for years were played there until the stadium became too dangerous because of the turf. Rivalry games such as Male-Manual, Flaget - STX and Trinity-STX for years were played there. It was considered an honor to play on the “carpet” even though the rug burns on your elbows drew blood. In its early years, there were NFL exhibition games played there and UofL played there for many years. Once the weather turned cold in the fall, there was more mud and straw on the field than grass. Lee Corso once referred to the field as “Astromud”. As many high school football fans as there are out there, feel free to share your high school football memory or any memory you may have of the stadium. The ole girl is coming down.

Even though more schools have or are getting turf fields, weather and field conditions are not conducive for most games after Halloween. This year there was a controversy about the muddy field at Anderson Co. Asking teams to play in unsatisfactory conditions in, up to that point of the season, the biggest game of the year is not fair to the players. Comparing the length of a football season with the length of a basketball season is comparing apples & oranges. Conditions for basketball are the same every game. For football, not so much.

Only 1 regular season home game between Aug 23 & Oct 4 is a little odd.

I saw where Paducah T is playing Holy Cross at LV Central. Is that Livingston Central or Louisville Central?

Impossible to have a 40 second clock in HS, especially when there are 5 man officiating crews. The BJ is responsible for the play clock and a lot of times he is involved in officiating the play. If I understand correctly, the 40 second clock starts once the play is over. So by the time the play is over there may be a 5 second delay in getting the play clock started, resulting in a possible 45 second (or more) play clock. The best possible scenario is to have play clocks on the field which many KY schools currently don’t have. The expense of having play clocks is the main reason schools don’t have them.

Back in November it was reported on WAVE TV that Coach Johnson had been taken off the field and reassigned. I don’t know if there are any newer developments since then.

A FG attempt is a scrimmage kick and is treated like a punt. A missed FG attempt is put in play at the spot it is declared dead. You are thinking of the college & pro rule.
