Honestly, I think DeSales should be #1 for now after beating St. X Union is a good team, but not that good.

I expect SK to win this game fairly easily. Station doesn't typically have a strong team and I haven't heard any buzz this year to suggest that they have changed. If SK does lose this game they should drop out of the top ten, unless Lafayette wins or plays Scott County close enough to justify Station as a good team despite their earlier loss.

Got a bit confused given my sources said Meade had a 5-6 season in '08. Looks like those playoff runs were from the '06 and '07 seasons according to the KHSAA. I checked some more into past seasons and was surprised to see that Meade did used to have some good season records in the early 00's. None of which changes my point that in the past ten years Meade has only had two successful seasons. I feel similarly about Manual's team right now. Past accomplishments do not mean someone has a strong team currently. People picking against Meade in '07 may have been incorrect but I also remember when people correctly picked Trinity over Meade in '14 despite the protests of several Meade county fans. Just because people doubt a team doesn't mean it's unjustified. Also, Meade is pretty close in male enrollment to SK (806 vs 871) so it not so much a 'luxury' to have enough players to platoon, but evidence of a good program. Meade has the enrollment to have similar numbers. If they don't that is on them, not anyone else.

I'd have to disagree with you there. Meade had a great run in 2013 and 2014 due to a talented class of kids. Other than those two years they haven't been impressive and are usually in the bottom half of 6A. 2008: 5-6 2009: 6-6 2010: 7-5 2011: 4-7 2012: 7-5 2015: 3-9 2016: 2-9 2017: 5-6 And they don't exactly play a brutal schedule True and there's no reason SK's drop should be permanent, especially not if Meade County shows themselves to be a good team this year. But right now we only have history and one game to judge on and honestly, SK struggling in this game doesn't make them look like a top ten team.

Definitely a bold statement even though Warren Central is an indisputably tough team. But Bowling Green did play the 2010 Shamrocks and they weren't exactly slouches either. Only time will tell which team is better.

Fair point. I think SK should drop at least one place in the weekly ranking after this game. Maybe even drop out of the top ten. Meade County went 2-9 and 5-6 over the past two seasons and SK struggled to beat them. Iirc Meade didn't return the house or gain some D1 talent over the summer. The closeness of this game is very revealing.

I agree that Covcath would've given Trinity a good game last year. They were a great team; probably #2 in the state. But Trinity was #1 and I believe they would've won 8 out of 10 games with Covcath. Nobody is saying that NKY teams are incapable of beating any Louisville team. That's obviously and patently untrue. But when comparing the best of the two areas, Louisville comes out on top. This has some elements of truth, but it's a vast oversimplification to state that county population is the only - or even the primary - factor. By that logic Fayette County with it's 310K population should produce top tier teams every year and Boyle County with only 29K would never win a title. I don't know if we read the same thread, but the one I saw started with CCH fans or other fans implying that CCH was better than Trinity. Trinity fans and Louisville people replied that CCH had not recently played a team as strong as Trinity and were getting ahead of themselves. The first of which is true, but certainly isn't a knock on CCH's schedule. Just out of curiosity how many times has CCH played a GCL team? Trinity has played quite a few over the years.

And last year Trinity beat them 31-3. Clearly this year is different.

I could not put Central Hardin above Butler. Maybe they are above PRP due to the losses PRP had to graduation, but Butler beat Male and Ryle last year. Also, Central Hardin only made it deep into the playoffs because of the bracket structure. They only had to play western schools to get to the semifinals and their game against Trinity was no contest (49-3). This year they are up against district 3 (Male, St. X, etc) because of cross-bracketing and it's possible that all the teams in district 2 will go out in the first round.

I completely agree that Manual does not deserve the 6th spot. They went 3-8 and even though the majority of the losses were single digits, they still lost to weak teams like Eastern and Fern Creek. Out of their three wins they barely beat Ballard and Western, winning by only 1 point, and their only other win was against Seneca. I don't think they should be in the top ten at all until we see some proof they've improved. I'm okay with Ballard at 10th for now, though I wouldn't be surprised by an early exit from the list for them. I strongly agree that Ryle should be in the top ten. SK is in and Ryle beat them by 18 points last year. Other than dropping Manual and putting in Ryle, it looks like a pretty solid list to me.

Some definite surprises. If I were ranking them after this weekend my list would look like: #1 Trinity #2 St. X #3 Male #4 Scott County #5 Lafayette - A solid win; time will tell if that is a good score against Bryan Station. #6 Simon Kenton - Huge score against an overmatched Meade #7 PRP - an expected result, PRP benefits from the losses of other teams to move up. #8 Ryle - the loss wasn't nearly as surprising as the score, Ryle slides down 3 places. #9 Manual - They kept it close but a loss to a 3A school still costs 1 place #10 Ballard - Competitive with DeSales, but couldn't keep up. They don't slide down because most of the teams below either haven't played or lost. #11 McCracken - no game results yet means they stay here for the moment #12 Tates Creek - A surprisingly powerful win over Henry Clay #13 Connor - No game play yet but they benefit from some losses to others #14 Butler - An absolute dismantling of Bullitt East pulls them into the top 15 #15 Cooper - A lopsided loss to Highlands costs them 3 places

In my opinion? They were the defending champs in 2016, coming off an amazing season last year. Many people were hoping that they would repeat despite their losses on the roster. This made them very sensitive about any criticism, especially coming from someone connected to Trinity (the biggest threat to a repeat). This year is pressure is off as 2016 was a good season, but not an amazing one.

You do realize that there's no way they would meet in the first round even if their districts were matched up, right?

Well, these'll have to tide me over since varsity isn't in Cincy this year. It will be nice to have a chance to see the pit at Elder.

For two reasons. One, because their weaker opponents are better than our weaker opponents. Two, because they have to play Trinity.
