From what I have seen of Scott County and St. X, it would be a pretty good matchup between them and the Pirates. BG, you are probably right, but who knows. BTW, to the poster who asked about Belfry fans. They travel well and will bring a decent, good contingent up North. They will probably double or triple whatever they take to NCC on the trip to Knoxville. There are a lot of Belfry folks who live near Knoxville.

Lawrence County hosted Belfry and pasted them. The year escapes me, but it had to be the slowest looking Belfry team ever. Or maybe it was just Michael West running all over the Pirates.

Great HS game. Belfry took some shots early, then came back to lead and eventually win, but until the final horn, GC was right there. As athletic of a team, besides Central's best, that Belfry has faced during this run IMO.

ATL, I definitely think the '98 SC game ranks near the top, and for me the 2011 Louisville Central game was the worst, especially considering how the 2010 game turned out and basically no one gave Belfry a chance in '11. Breathitt in 2008, was bad for me too. To lose that one on your home turf made it tough after having pounded the 'Cats in 2007.

Belfry/CM would develop quickly into a real good rivalry win or lose for the Pirates. I agree that CM could be important to Belfry's future schedules mainly because of the difficulty Belfry has in getting games and the uncertainty of Sheldon Clark being in the district in the future. The atmosphere up at CM was great last year even on a dreary night, and when Belfry had a slim chance to get back in the game, CM quickly doused any hope and was obviously the much better team that night. This year's game shapes up to be a good one based on what Belfry returns and some of the really good players CM lost, even though their cupboard is far from empty.

Injuries, or lack of, are always key. The 2014 team had as many injuries to key players as I can remember, but come the state semis and the championship game, everyone was good to go. So timing of injuries can be key. Last year, it was really scary how few key injuries Belfry had. Austin Hall's broken hand, and Chase Dove missing a couple of game were about it, except for the regular sprains and bruises that may have cost a player a game or two. IMO, if Belfry stays relatively healthy and has a great mindset, as ATL said, then the sky will be the limit for the Pirates.

I was beginning to wonder if anyone had actually read the press release noting that they decided AGAINST playing within the same district and left alone the traditional cross district matchups.

The O line award from WYMT is always and entire unit. They list the individual names and a key backup or two so that the viewers/readers know who makes up that unit.

Totally agree ATLCat. People who follow Belfry as close as anyone regard those two very highly and i have even heard these same people put them as potential all time best types with a year to play.

Pike Central?

Exactly, Mayfield was indeed the champ and give them credit for that, but this was anywhere near the greatest Mayfield team. Bright is a nice player for sure, really good, but overall not a real athletic team and Pikeville would have a chance for sure. Maybe a 55-45% advantage for Mayfield. I know SW would be a challenge for Belfry due to their run defense, but the Belfry O line and a great D of their own would keep Belfry in it and maybe get the win. That would be a 50-50 game IMO.

Haywood has seemed to enjoy this championship as much as any. He deserves it because we never know how long he will stay with it. I could see him calling it quits tomorrow and I can see him go another 5-10 years.

IMO place Pugh up there with the all time greats at PHS. Argue all day about who would be number one, but at minimum Pugh is near the top of the list IMO!

I think it can be closer than the 4 past meetings in the playoffs, but I doubt by much. I think Belfry by a 35-42 to 14 score. I wouldn't pay much attention to the regular season game as a factor in this game. Belfry will probably not lose 7 fumbles this time around.

Belfry's streak is 6 straight as they didn't make the region final in 2009. They have been in 13/14 if I'm not mistaken dating back to 2002.

Haywood going for win number 400 adds a little spice to this game. He was number 13 in the nation among active coaches going into this season if I am not mistaken according to MaxPreps. Good Luck to both teams.
