Is the KHSAA thinking about changing the first two rounds of the football playoffs?

Featured Replies

Is there a movement to go to inter-district playoff matchups for the first two rounds of the playoffs?

From a travel perspective it makes sense. However, if you are going to do that, one round of the playoffs should definitely be eliminated.

Anyone?

Forget that nonsense... just let the top two teams in.

The only way I would support this is to let the 1 seeds have a BYE and let the #2 and #3 teams from the District duke it out for the right to play the opposing Districts 1 seed in the 2nd Round.

This proposal has nothing to do with travel. It is simply being packaged that way.

Transparency...

What does it have to do with?

From what I understand it's a done deal. 2017-18 playoffs will be within district. Last 2 weeks of regular season will not be used for district games!!!!

Apparently this is A LOT going on we are not hearing about.

Thanks for the info.

This is the natural fallout of 6 classes. Districts and Regions are geographically wider as the number of classes grows. The charts linked in the other thread showed small schools had some awefully long travel times for that first weekend. As as folks often note here about a half of the games are not competative.

The distance translates into cost - driver/fuel. It also translates into time. And in many cses the team is having to be released early to make a distant game. Not sure if some schools release the entire body to travel, if they want, in some csees. But certainly some school time is being lost by the teams for sure.

I think this is a bad mistake IMO. I didn't like that when that was done a few years ago. If they have passed this through the have slipped another one on the coaches.

Agreed. The problem with when they did it a few years ago was district games were at the end of the season and then right into the playoffs (we played Corbin back to back weeks with poor results). Adjusting the district schedule dates makes things a little better, but if my team got routed by our playoff opponent three weeks ago I'm not too likely to go watch the game again. Even if we are also likely to lose against the opposite district opponent, at least it is a new team in a different venue.

What are the coaches views on inter district. The few that I know do not want the inter district playoffs. It is strange that it would be termed a done deal.

BAD IDEA. Don't you just nullify the regular season? What if one district has the best two or three teams of the two districts? Boyle and Lex Cath are great examples this past season. You not only take them out even earlier, but you also allow a for a blowout in later rounds when the other district is weak.

I'd honestly be fine with this for the first round, but I really wouldn't much care for it beyond that. I know of plenty of districts where the 1 or 2 could beat everyone in the cross.

But, for the first round, you're keeping everybody at least reasonably close to home. And, I don't think it would solve any of the 1 vs. 4 blowouts that we can see, or some of the 2 vs. 3 ones either. But, you wouldn't have teams travelling several hours just to get the clock run on them. They aren't paying a ton of travel expenses and food, just to be a sacrificial lamb.

The only catch is that I think it could lose the feel of the playoffs. Instead of facing a team you haven't faced this season, it's a familiar opponent. Maybe that's just me, but I think part of the playoff atmosphere is playing teams that you wouldn't normally.

It is a horrible idea that I think the coaches are against.

Don't like it. Perhaps the only fun thing about the majority of the games in the first round or two of the playoffs is those inter district games where you get to see how one district matches up with another.

What if you made only the one versus four games intra district and left everything else as is?
