The Worst Beating Your Team Ever Took?

Featured Replies

The dynasty thread got me thinking and inspired a series of threads I will start to rehash some history.

Just like the title says, what is the worst beating(s) you can remember your team ever taking?

Now keep in mind this doesn't necessarily mean the worst loss in terms of point spread. I have seen many a game get lopsided because one team just plays well while the other lays an egg. What I am getting at more is the one or more times that sticks out to you that you just watched your team get shredded by a far superior opponent that simply outclassed them.

For me the two games that stick out for Belfry are:

1997 @ Breathitt County

After opening the season by going toe to toe with Louisville Male and shutting down the Male Offense before losing 7-0, Belfry was riding high entering what was hyped as a showdown featuring the top two teams in EKY. Breathitt ambushed Belfry! Belfry's Offense couldn't move the ball and Breathitt picked them apart en route to something like a 42-7 or 49-7 win. I am not sure Kyle Moore threw an incomplete pass and just remember these perfect fly patterns on the sideline and the Breathitt receiver catching it without breaking stride.

Belfry's First Meeting with Ironton, OH

@Watusi may be able to fill in the year for me. I want to say it was like 1993 or so...

What I remember about this game was that as a kid everything about that Ironton team just seemed larger than life. This was before the days of the internet so you heard rumors of teams or read stuff in the paper, but never got to see teams first hand unless you were playing them. When Ironton showed up to Pond Creek they brought their own personalized Charter Buses, a 100 piece marching band, as many fans as Belfry, and they looked like the Cleveland Browns in more ways than one. This was the height of Ironton's dominating run in Ohio and they had two or three D-1 players and just smashed Belfry. I had never witnessed team speed or shear size like that.

There were so many back in the day where do I begin......

Tough to lose in the '73 Championship Game, however the worst loss in school history is when Fleming Neon threw up 91 on Elkhorn City.

I have some extremely not fond recollections of watching Bowling Green beat Warren Central senseless via a 63-0 result in the 2007 playoffs. They were laughably overmatched, and things were made worse by a completely hair-brained idea to implement an entirely new wishbone offense the week before that game, using a sophomore at QB that they were always trying to square peg into a round hole (that QB, Troy Halcomb, finally came into his own as a senior in the Wing-T under Rogers). That 2007 Bowling Green team was at that time the most prolific offensive team in Purple history (now third). They're still the best offensive Bowling Green team that didn't win a state title. It was not a pretty game.

Statistically, the worst they ever took was a 100-12 loss to Campbellsville on 10/3/1969, the 16th game the team ever played. They were down 56-6 at the half.

3 years ago, I coached my Fox Creek basketball team to a resounding 118-47 loss in a tournament in Richmond, IN. We have taken some beatings in the past, mostly because I'm not afraid to schedule and we have played competition at times waaaaay above our caliber, but this one probably took the cake. Jeffersonville was at the time ranked top 20 in Indiana, and essentially the same team the year before had beaten Trinity. I had a few players kind of curl up and die on me too, didn't put up much of a fight which didn't help, but then again that's why we went, I wanted to identify who would fight and who would qui and give up, and use it as a learning experience. We lost 1 game the rest of the season after that tournament and wen on to win our championship that we weren't expected to win, so I guess it worked.

While it wasn't the worst, the loss to Male in the 2000 championship game hurt. We were down 34-0 at halftime.

I don't think this was the worst beating but...

1971 or 72, I think. Wydell Snow.....he killed us.

I think I remember losing 65-0 to Lexington Catholic in 1993. That sucked.

Evans North 63 Mayfield 10 2004, North took out behind the stadium and absolutely murdered us.

Tilghman beat the life out of Mayfield in 1971 I believe it was and I think the score was 71-0 or there abouts. I was like 3 at the time so I have no memory of it thank goodness

79-20 my junior year. I won't name the opponent because it's not fair to their current coaches. Still have a bad taste in my mouth about that one.

Lawrence County hosted Belfry and pasted them. The year escapes me, but it had to be the slowest looking Belfry team ever. Or maybe it was just Michael West running all over the Pirates.

1997 season, SK lost to Highlands 76-, Holloween. We have them a good fight in 98.

1991 - Ironton 54 Russell 14

Russell had a good team that year. At one point, they were 10-1 and ranked just outside the top five in their class. Their only losses were this one against Ironton and a playoff upset to Lawrence County. The Fighting Tigers were the biggest, baddest bully on the block in the KY/OH/WV tri-state area. I think they even stole our lunch money that night.

1998 - Lawrence County 64 Russell 34

We rode a modest six game winning streak into Louisa to face the unbeaten Dawgs. We had given them a fight in Flatwoods the year before, so we were confident going into the '98 game. However, the combination of Alan Short, Nick Meadows, Gerad Parker and a physical, nasty offensive line proved to be too much. We put up some points and yards on their defense, but their offense ran through us like a hot knife through butter.

2013 - Bourbon County 49 Russell 0

RB Brent Holman averaged about 16 ypc that night in Paris. That Colonels team was a runaway freight train until they ran into Belfry.
