One of the articles I located was about how Kelly was treated in the state tournament. It's pretty long and very biased, probably because it was written by someone in Floyd County who felt he had been mistreated. I'd be willing to type it if there was anyone who expresses a desire to read it.

I don't know whether you might be interested in reading about this or not. For years I had heard stories about the great Kelly Coleman. It was almost like the fishing stories you hear; they got bigger every time you heard the story. One day I decided to go through microfilm and read the actual accounts from 1956. Those stories I printed off and will be sharing some numbers from those actual newspapers accounts. Charlie Osborne is high on the list of all-time state scorers. Kelly Coleman is definitely number 1. Here are some numbers from the 15th Region during that 1956 season. There may be mistakes; I didn't check the newspaper's math. Some were dim and printed poorly. Yes, they won it so they need to be congratulated. I do like their team very much and they worked hard on a well deserved championship. If you didn't get there you are not in the discussion.

Ira was passionate about his basketball. He will certainly be missed. Prayers to the Combs family!

I will be pulling for Boyle County. I have some real good friends from there so I must stay with them.

People criticized Knott for paying Trinity to come play in the pre-season. It's a long trip to the mountains and expensive so I understand better teams not wanting to travel. Knott had to play Jenkins, JB, and LCC twice because of being in the district. Contracts with schools you mentioned as being weak were not intentional on Knott's part. It was a relatively very easy schedule. No debate here but I can tell you it wasn't because the Patriots were running from competition. I admire Bracken for coming to the mountains and wanting to test their young team. I will agree on one point; you only get better by playing the best. However, circumstances prohibit one from having a solid schedule.

FYI! Knott has not lost the rebounds battle a single time this year. Beaten by Sagemont, Florida when shooting less than 30% and lost to SW when SW shot better than 60%.

Just so happens that Tuesday night I was talking to my uncle, Elmond Hall, who played with Kelly Coleman. We were talking about Charley Osborne, the second leading scorer of all time in Kentucky. Elmond is telling me that Kelly could score ever how many he wanted to, and when he wanted to. He went on to say that Charley was a really good player but there was a guy that played over at Inez that was better than Charley was. He couldn't remember his name but said he was really tough. He went on to talk about Curry at Wheelwright, Risner at Garrett, and others that could fill it up. There was a common theme in those days. Coal camps that supported their local teams and they all had stars that could fill it up. To be quite honest I could sit and talk with him all day about the Kelly days. Elmond's grandson is now playing with another star, Cam Justice, so there is a lot of correlation between the 56 Wasps and the 15 Patriots.

Way back in the late 60's we went to Breathitt to practice for the regionals. However, the bus driver blew the engine before we could get to the Breathitt county line. The reason I remember it so well we coasted into the parking lot of the last business where you could buy booze in Perry County. LOL Anyone thirsty, me always!

I can tell you he is not going to score just to go after the record. He has passed up wide open lay ups at least fifteen times to give Evan an assist for a thunder dunk. This team, in their minds, have a higher goal. They are closer than I have seen them in the three previous seasons at Knott. On a similar note his teammates will sacrifice everything but wins to help him achieve his personal goals.

Perry had better be careful. Terell has a way of getting players in foul trouble. Letcher is getting better with the 1-4 offense, spreading the floor so Carter can go one on one, score, dish, or draw fouls. If Banks is hitting the three they can create issues for Perry.

Buckhorn has one of my favorite coaches. He gets everything possible out of his kids. His kids don't want to let him down so they leave their heart on the line. I have seen some coaches who think they know it all when it comes to the game. The number one issue they have is not being able to relate to their kids. When kids don't like their coach they lose close games or simply refuse to play at all. When you hear of a school that has three or four players who no longer play you can bet that there is an arrogance issue with that coach. Time for a change in leadership when this happens.

There have been many times that Justice could have scored 35 to 40 points but Knott has never tried to pad his stats that way. Look at the individual game stats and you will see this is true.

Off topic but I am really disappointed that the last two games of Knott County Central have been canceled. Cam has lost two scoring opportunities to possibly be able to move up to number 2 on the all time Kentucky scoring list. He has worked so hard for four years so I wanted him to get a shot.
