Got to see sophomore Jake Ohmer from Covington Scott High School score 51 pts. last night in the Lloyd Memorial tournament. It was a fun game to watch as the young man helped bring his team back from an early 17-2 deficit to defeat Stewart's Creek, TN 87-80.

 

I thought it would be fun to reminisce about some of the highest individual scoring feats in Ky. high school basketball over the years that you have witnessed.

 

I personally have seen maybe the top 4 in Northern Ky. although there may be others that I missed. I saw Scott Draud score 69 against Holmes at the fieldhouse in 1986 without the benefit of the 3 pt shot. Two years later I witnessed Jack Jennings make a run at that Northern Ky. record also at the fieldhouse at Holmes and fall just short with 68 pts. He also had 21 rebouds in that game, against Newport Central Catholic . In 1980 I saw Dicky Beal drop 50 on Holy Cross at the fieldouse at Holmes. What do you all remember about the highest scoring games you have witnessed?

Saw Cameron Justice put up 62 points in LexCath's tournament in 2012.

Saw Brent Bach hang 48 or 49 against Mason Co last yr. also watched Austin Crawford hang 44 couple weeks ago on Pendelton Co.

I saw John Brannen go for about 44 and Stretch Greene go for about that in an epic duel up on the hill.

When did Basketball become an individual sport ? I must be old school, would rather see 5 starters in double fig than 1 kid taking every shot. Burns my butt to see a kid score 25-35 pts and lose the game.

I saw Jerry McIntosh of Owsley County score 65 in a game in 1980. That's the school record. Jerry went on to play at Union College.

Good question, I'll have to think about this one. Nothing jumps out at me.

Was at the 1995 10th Region Final when Billy Ray Fawns went for 47 and Shawn Myrick had 44.

 

We hosted Augusta 2 years ago and Bach had 45 and Mason Monroe had 39.

 

Then there's that 44 point effort Crawford had against us last Friday night.

I don't think any of these kids mentioned here had extreme averages these were just exceptional games in their careers. Scott Draud did lead the state in scoring in 1986 at 35.3 pts/game. He also led them to the 9th region championship and a trip to the state tournament. I agree with you that it's no fun to watch one player take most of the shots but there are days when a player is in a zone.

I totally agree with you on this statement that scoring only makes sense when your team wins in correlation. I'm Brent Bach's Dad and he averaged 31.3 ppg (#1 in KY) his Senior year scoring 1002 pts. We have 104 kids in HS and we won over 70 games during his Freshman-Senior years winning 2 39th District Tournaments and Runners up finishes making the Regional semi's for the first time since 1950. We had GREAT team results during his tenure and that's what he's most proud of. Scoring for the sake of scoring was never his goal..........it's all about leadership and winning and making others around you better.

 

I agree, if you average 50 a game and your team is 5 and 25 what's the point?

He was a remarkable shooter, probably the best high school shooter I ever watched play. I'll never forget watching him at a basketball camp at Northern when Kenny Shields coached there. He had Scott who was out of college by then give the kids a few tips on how to improve their shooting. He told the kids he might be a little rusty and that he hadn't picked up a a basketball in several months. All he did was shoot 10 shots from each of 5 spots from the foul line to half court and proceed to make 48 of 50 shots. The kids and I as well sat there with our mouths open as he did this, amazing if you ask me.

Barry Scott of Holy Cross with 49 against Talbert Turner-led Pendleton County back in '82. .. this before the 3-point shot, of course. I believe this set HC's scoring record at the time.

Your son is a great player! Not trying to take away from any of the team a acomplishments with my post. I was trying to give him praise on an awesome individual performance that I'm glad to say I witnessed. Brent was/is one of those special players that doesn't come around often. So I don't think it's a negative on the team to talk about his personal milestones. Again I was not intending to discredit anything the Panthers as a team accomplished as a team in Brent's tenure. :thumb:
