I saw Joe Stepp (Ervin Stepp's older brother)of Warfield score 52 in 1972 at the old Hitchins High School Gym against East Carter(East didn't ahve their own gym until 1980) a player for East Carter named Mike Johnston scored 48 for East Carter. East Carter won the ball game 114-88. Also those numbers were with no 3 point line Stepp would have had 60+ and Johnston would have 50+ it was something to see.

Just out of curiosity, what was the Kingdom Come mascot/nickname?

 

I remember one of my golfing buddies, he's in his mid 70s now, talking about playing at Kingdom Come, and if I'm not mistaken he said the gym was located on a second level of a building and there were chimneys on each end of the floor directly behind the baskets. He said when a player went in for a layup he had to put on the brakes fast to avoid crashing into the brick chimney, lol.

Watched a game at Phelps back in the day (way before Ervin Stepp). Walls were so close to the court behind the baskets that you just about had to turn your feet sideways to inbound the ball without touching the line.

He was a legend in the eastern Ky mountains. He averaged 47.2 pts per game his junior year and 53.7 pts his senior year 1980. They used to pack so many people in the gyms to watch him that they had to move games to a bigger gym to accommodate the crowds. Here is an interview some reporter did with him in 2009.

His dad was a welder and cut the rim down to 15" for him and his brothers to shoot on one summer. He said it made it like shooting into a bathtub when he went back to school that fall.
